Which job might you have done during the Shang Dynasty? |

In the Shang Dynasty, the role of king was passed down through the royal family, meaning only those born into royalty could become king. However, the royal court included various roles such as agricultural officials, dog officers for hunting, guards, musicians, and astronomers. Nobles held significant wealth and influence, with their power tied to their connection to the royal family. Scribes were also present, as evidenced by oracle bones with writing, used for record-keeping.
Commoners were often conscripted into the army to fight. Artisans and laborers crafted bronze vessels and weapons, while many worked in mines or transported materials like copper, tin, and lead for bronze production. The majority of ordinary people were farm laborers or craftspeople.
Women in the Shang Dynasty were excluded from public roles and from taking exams. They focused on skills like weaving, which were designated for women. However, some women, like Fu Hao, a military general and high priestess, achieved significant power and high-ranking positions.
