Edith Cavell: A Legacy of Compassion and Courage

Edith, a dedicated nurse, impartially saved soldiers from all factions during the war. She fearlessly helped soldiers evade capture by German forces, risking her own life. Arrested and found guilty of treason, she was sentenced to death. Executed in 1915, she spoke profoundly the day before her death: “Patriotism is not sufficient; I must hold no hatred or bitterness toward anyone.” Her bravery and compassion remain an enduring inspiration.

  • Edith Cavell chose a nursing career after tending to her ill father. She began her training at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel in 1896.
  • When World War One erupted between Britain and Germany, she traveled to Belgium to aid wounded soldiers, treating them impartially whether they were British, French, or German.
  • In secret, Edith helped 200 soldiers evade capture by German forces. When her actions were discovered, she was arrested by the Germans.
  • During questioning, she confessed to assisting soldiers in escaping to continue fighting against Germany. As a result, the Germans sentenced her to death by firing squad.
  • Following her execution, a memorial service was held at Westminster Abbey, and she was buried at Norwich Cathedral.
  • Today, Edith is widely regarded as a hero for sacrificing her life to help British, French, and Belgian soldiers escape German capture and for aiding numerous others in recovering from injuries and illnesses.
