Worksheet - Determiners | English Grammar (Communicative) Interact In English- Class 9 PDF Download

Introduction: Determiners are words like the, an, my, some. They are grammatically similar. They all come at the beginning of noun phrases, and usually we cannot use more than one determiner in the same noun phrase.
Determiners are different to pronouns in that a determiner is always followed by a noun. Therefore personal pronouns (I, you, he, etc.) and possessive pronouns (mine, yours, his, etc.) cannot be determiners.
The definite and indefinite articles a, an and the are all determiners.

FAQs on Worksheet - Determiners - English Grammar (Communicative) Interact In English- Class 9

1. What are determiners and why are they important in English grammar?
Ans. Determiners are words that come before nouns to give more information about them. They include articles (a, an, the), demonstratives (this, that, these, those), possessives (my, your, his, her, its, our, their), quantifiers (some, any, many, few), and numbers (one, two, three, etc.). Determiners are important in English grammar because they help to specify or quantify nouns, providing clarity and precision in meaning.
2. How do articles function as determiners in sentences?
Ans. Articles, such as "a," "an," and "the," function as determiners in sentences by specifying whether a noun is definite or indefinite. "A" and "an" are indefinite articles that are used before singular countable nouns to refer to any one of a class or type. "The" is a definite article that is used before both singular and plural nouns to refer to a specific or particular person, thing, or group.
3. Can possessive pronouns be used as determiners?
Ans. Yes, possessive pronouns such as "my," "your," "his," "her," "its," "our," and "their" can be used as determiners. When these pronouns are used before a noun, they indicate ownership or possession. For example, in the phrase "my book," the possessive pronoun "my" functions as a determiner to show that the book belongs to the speaker.
4. How do quantifiers function as determiners in English grammar?
Ans. Quantifiers, such as "some," "any," "many," and "few," function as determiners in English grammar by expressing the quantity or amount of a noun. They provide information about whether the noun is specific or non-specific, and whether it is singular or plural. For example, in the phrase "some apples," the quantifier "some" functions as a determiner to indicate an unspecified quantity of apples.
5. What is the difference between cardinal numbers and ordinal numbers as determiners?
Ans. Cardinal numbers, such as "one," "two," "three," etc., are used as determiners to indicate quantity or number. They answer the question "how many?" For example, in the phrase "two cats," the cardinal number "two" functions as a determiner to specify the number of cats. On the other hand, ordinal numbers, such as "first," "second," "third," etc., are used as determiners to indicate the position or order of something in a series. They answer the question "which one?" For example, in the phrase "the first place," the ordinal number "first" functions as a determiner to indicate the position of the place.
