FAQs on Worksheet - Relative pronouns - English An Alien Hand Class 7

1. What are relative pronouns?
Ans. Relative pronouns are words that are used to introduce relative clauses, which provide additional information about a noun or pronoun in the main clause of a sentence. They include words such as "who," "whom," "whose," "which," and "that."
2. How do relative pronouns function in a sentence?
Ans. Relative pronouns function as the subject or object of a relative clause. They connect the relative clause to the noun or pronoun it modifies in the main clause. For example, in the sentence "The woman who is wearing a red dress is my sister," the relative pronoun "who" introduces the relative clause "who is wearing a red dress," and it refers back to the noun "woman" in the main clause.
3. Can relative pronouns be used to refer to things and animals?
Ans. Yes, relative pronouns can be used to refer to things and animals. The relative pronouns "which" and "that" are commonly used to introduce relative clauses that provide additional information about non-human subjects or objects. For example, in the sentence "The book that is on the table is mine," the relative pronoun "that" introduces the relative clause "that is on the table," and it refers back to the noun "book" in the main clause.
4. Are there any rules for choosing the correct relative pronoun?
Ans. Yes, there are some rules for choosing the correct relative pronoun. - "Who" is used to refer to people. For example, "The girl who is singing has a beautiful voice." - "Whom" is used as the object of a verb or preposition in a relative clause. For example, "The man whom I met yesterday is my neighbor." - "Whose" is used to show possession. For example, "The dog whose tail is wagging is very friendly." - "Which" is used to refer to things or animals. For example, "The car which is parked outside is mine." - "That" can be used to refer to both people and things. For example, "The restaurant that serves delicious food is my favorite."
5. Can relative pronouns be omitted in a sentence?
Ans. Yes, relative pronouns can be omitted in certain cases, especially when they are the object of the relative clause. This is more common in informal speech and writing. For example, instead of saying "The woman who(m) I saw yesterday," you can say "The woman I saw yesterday." However, if the relative pronoun is the subject of the relative clause, it cannot be omitted.
