FAQs on Decimals Class 6 Worksheet Maths Chapter 8

1. What are decimals and how are they used in mathematics?
Ans. Decimals are a way to represent numbers that are not whole or integers. They are used in mathematics to express parts of a whole or to represent values that fall between two whole numbers. For example, 0.5 represents half of a whole, and 3.25 represents a value that is greater than 3 but less than 4.
2. How do you compare decimals?
Ans. To compare decimals, we start from the left and compare the digits in each place value. If the digits in the same place value are equal, we move to the next place value to the right until we find digits that are different. The decimal with the greater digit in the first differing place value is considered greater than the other decimal. For example, 0.75 is greater than 0.65 because the digit in the tenths place (7) is greater than the digit in the tenths place (6).
3. How do you add and subtract decimals?
Ans. To add or subtract decimals, we line up the decimal points and perform the operation as we would with whole numbers. If the decimal places do not line up, we can add zeros to the right of the decimal point to make them line up. After performing the addition or subtraction, we keep the decimal point in the same position as the original decimals. For example, to add 2.3 and 1.45, we line up the decimal points and get the sum 3.75.
4. How do you multiply decimals?
Ans. To multiply decimals, we multiply the numbers as if they were whole numbers, disregarding the decimal point. Then, we count the total number of digits after the decimal point in the original numbers and place the decimal point in the product so that it has the same number of digits after the decimal point. For example, to multiply 1.2 and 0.5, we multiply 12 and 5 to get 60, and then place the decimal point so that the product is 0.6.
5. How do you divide decimals?
Ans. To divide decimals, we move the decimal point in the divisor to the right until it becomes a whole number. Then, we move the decimal point in the dividend the same number of places. After that, we perform the division as we would with whole numbers. Finally, we place the decimal point in the quotient directly above the decimal point in the dividend. For example, to divide 3.6 by 0.4, we move the decimal point in both numbers one place to the right, resulting in 36 divided by 4, which gives a quotient of 9.
