पाठ का सार
इस पाठ में लेखिका महादेवी वर्मा का एक छोटे, चंचल जीव गिलहरी के प्रति प्रेम झलकता है। उन्होंने इस पाठ में उसके विभिन्न क्रियाकलापों और लेखिका के प्रति उसके प्रेम से हमें अवगत कराया है। उन्होंने गिलहरी जैसे लघु जीव के जीवन का बड़ा अच्छे ढंग से चित्रण किया है।
- एक दिन लेखिका की नजर बरामदे में गिलहरी के एक छोटे से बच्चे पर पड़ी जो शायद घोंसले से गिर गया होगा जिसे दो कौवे मिलकर अपना शिकार बनाने की तैयारी में थे। लेखिका गिलहरी के बच्चे को उठाकर अपने रूम ले गयी और कौवे की चोंच से घायल बच्चे का मरहम-पट्टी किया। कई घंटे के उपचार के बाद मुँह में एक बूँद पानी टपकाया जा सका। तीसरे दिन वह इतना अच्छा हो गया कि लेखिका की ऊँगली अपने पंजो से पकड़ने लगा।
- तीन चार महीने में उसके चिकने रोएँ, झब्बेदार पूँछ और चंचल चमकती आँखें सभी को आश्चर्य में डालने लगीं। लेखिका ने उसका नाम गिल्लू रखा। लेखिका ने फूल रखने की एक हल्की डलिया में रुई बिछाकर तार से खिड़की पर लटका दिया जो दो साल तक गिल्लू का घर रहा।
- गिल्लू ने लेखिका का ध्यान आकर्षित करने के लिए वह लेखिका के पैर तक आकर सर्र से पर्दे पर चढ़ जाता और फिर उसी तेजी से उतरता। वह दौड़ लगाने का काम तब तक करता जब तक लेखिका उसे पकड़ने के लिए न उठती। वह अपनी चमकीली आँखों से लेखिका के क्रियाकलापों को भी देखा करता। भूख लगने पर वह लेखिका को चिक-चिक कर सूचना देता था।
- गिल्लू के जीवन में पहला बसंत आया। अन्य गिलहरियाँ जाली खिड़की के जाली के पास आकर चिक-चिक करने लगीं और गिल्लू भी जाली के पास जाकर बैठा रहता। इसे देखकर लेखिका ने जाली के एक कोना खोलकर गिल्लू को मुक्त कर दिया।
- लेखिका के कमरे से बाहर जाने पर गिल्लू भी जाली से बाहर चला जाता। वह दिन भर अन्य गिलहरियों के साथ उछलता-कूदता और शाम होते ही अपने झूले में वापस आ जाता। लेखिका के खाने के कमरे में पहुँचते ही गिल्लू भी वहाँ पहुँच जाता और थाली में बैठ जाना चाहता। बड़ी मुश्किल से लेखिका ने उसे थाली के पास बैठना सिखाया। वह वहीं बैठकर चावल का एक-एक दानासफाई से खाता।
- गिल्लू का प्रिय खाद्य पदार्थ काजू था। कई दिन काजू नहीं मिलने पर वह अन्य खानें की चीजें लेना बंद कर देता या झूले से नीचे फेंक देता था। उसी बीच लेखिका मोटर दुर्घटना में आहत हो गयीं जिससे उन्हें कुछ दिन अस्पताल में रुकना पड़ा। उन दिनों में गिल्लू ने अपना प्रिय पदार्थ काजू लेना काफी कर दिया था। लेखिका के घर लौटने पर वह तकिये पर सिरहाने बैठकर अपने नन्हे पंजों से लेखिका सर और बालों को हौले-हौले सहलाता और एक सेविका की भूमिका निभाता।
- गर्मियों में वह लेखिका के पास रखी सुराही पर लेट जाता और लेखिका के समीप रहने के साथ-साथ ठंडक में भी रहता। चूँकि गिलहरियों की उम्र दो वर्ष से अधिक नहीं होती इसलिए उसके जीवन का भी अंत आ गया। दिन भर उसने कुछ नहीं खाया-पीया। रात में वह झूले से उतरकर लेखिका के बिस्तर पर आया और ठंडे पंजों से उनकी उँगली पकड़कर चिपक गया। लेखिका ने हीटर जलाकर उसे ऊष्मा देने का प्रयास किया परन्तु प्रयास व्यर्थ रहा और सुबह की पहली किरण के साथ सदा के लिए सो गया।
- लेखिका ने उसे सोनजुही की लता के नीचे उसे समाधि दी। सोनजुही में एक पीली कली को देखकर लेखिका को गिल्लू की याद आ गयी।
