FAQs on Matrix-Match Type Questions: Chemical Bonding & Molecular Structure - JEE Advanced - 35 Years Chapter wise Previous Year Solved Papers for JEE

1. What is the definition of a chemical bond?
Ans. A chemical bond is a force of attraction between two or more atoms that holds them together in a chemical compound. It is formed when atoms share or transfer electrons to achieve a more stable electronic configuration.
2. What are the different types of chemical bonds?
Ans. The different types of chemical bonds include ionic bonds, covalent bonds, and metallic bonds. Ionic bonds are formed through the transfer of electrons between atoms, covalent bonds are formed through the sharing of electrons, and metallic bonds are formed between metal atoms through a delocalized sea of electrons.
3. How is a covalent bond different from an ionic bond?
Ans. In a covalent bond, two atoms share electrons to achieve a stable electronic configuration. This bond is usually formed between nonmetal atoms. On the other hand, an ionic bond is formed between a metal atom and a nonmetal atom through the transfer of electrons. In an ionic bond, one atom loses electrons to become a positively charged ion (cation) while the other atom gains those electrons to become a negatively charged ion (anion).
4. What is the VSEPR theory?
Ans. The VSEPR (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion) theory is used to predict the shape of molecules based on the arrangement of electron pairs around the central atom. According to this theory, electron pairs in the valence shell of an atom repel each other, leading to specific geometries such as linear, trigonal planar, tetrahedral, etc.
5. How does molecular structure affect the properties of a compound?
Ans. The molecular structure of a compound determines its properties such as polarity, boiling point, melting point, and reactivity. For example, in a polar molecule, there is an unequal distribution of electron density, leading to a dipole moment and making the molecule more soluble in polar solvents. On the other hand, nonpolar molecules have symmetrical electron distributions and are usually insoluble in polar solvents.
