What is JEE Main?

Joint Entrance Examination - Main or commonly known as JEE Main is a national level entrance exam conducted by the NTA to offer admission to BE/BTech, BPlan and BArch courses at the IIITs (Indian Institute of Information Technology), NITs (National Institute of Technology) and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) across the country.

  • The counselling cum seat allotment for all the IITs, NITs, IIITs and CFTIs will be organised and managed by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). In 2020, 107 institutes participated in JoSAA Counselling.

JEE Main 2021

NTA has taken several measures for JEE Main 2021 including holding the exam in four sessions this year.
Here's a look at the important points to remember in the new exam pattern:

  • Increased Sessions: JEE Mains 2021 will be conducted for four times this year. Session 1 and Session 2 of JEE (Main) 2021 were held in February and March 2021. The next two sessions will be conducted in April and May 2021. It will help students to appear in any or all four exams as per their choice. If any candidate appears in all four sessions of the exam, his/her best score will be considered for the counselling process.
  • Session-Wise Registrations: JEE Main 2021 application form window will reopen after the result of each session is announced. One-time fee payment can be done while filling the form for multiple sessions. If a student does not appear for a particular session, a request can be made to forward the fee for the next session that the student plans to appear for. This needs to be done online within the provided fee payment window. In case a student wants to opt out of a session for which the fees have been paid, a request can be made to refund the fee for that session.
  • Exam in Local Languages: For the first time, JEE Main 2021 will be conducted in 13 languages including English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Malayalam, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. It will enable the candidates to choose to appear in their regional language.
  • Revised Pattern: Candidates are now required to attempt a total of 75 questions out of 90. Out of 30 questions in every section (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics), candidates will be required to attempt only 25 questions. This step has been taken keeping in mind the reduced syllabus in Class 12 Boards across the country. However, it is important to note that the syllabus for JEE Mains 2021 has not been reduced.
Each Subject will have two sections. Section A will be of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) and section B will contain Questions whose answers are to be filled in as a numerical value. In Section B, candidates have to attempt any five questions out of 10. There will be no negative marking for Section B.
  • Relaxation in Admission Eligibility: 75% criteria has been scrapped for this year as well. Candidates who clear JEE Main 2021 will only need their Class 12 passing certificate for admissions, irrespective of scores obtained by them.
