Question 7: Complete the following table:

  + −6 −4 −2  0  2  4  6
  6      10
  4
  2        8
  0 −6
 −2
 −4       0
 −6    −6

From the above table
(i)
Write all the pairs of integers whose sum is 0.
(ii) is (−4) + (−2) = (−2) + (−4)?
(iii) is 0 + (−6) = −6?

ANSWER:

(i) (6, −6), (4, −4), (2, −2), (0, 0), (−2, 2), (−4, 4) and (−6,6).

(ii) (−4) + (−2) = −6 = (−2) + (−4); Yes

(iii) 0 + (−6) = −6; Yes

   +   −6  −4  −2    0    2    4    6
   6    0   2   4    6    8   10   12
   4   −2   0   2    4      6    8   10
   2   −4  −2   0    2    4    6    8
   0   −6  −4  −2    0    2    4    6
  −2   −8  −6  −4   −2    0    2    4
  −4  −10  −8  −6   −4   −2    0    2
  −6  −12  −10  −8   −6   −4   −2    0

Question 8:

Find an integer x such that
(i) x + 1 = 0
(ii) x + 5 = 0
(iii) −3 + x = 0
(iv) x + (−8) = 0
(v) 7 + x = 0
(vi) x + 0 = 0

ANSWER:

(i) x +  1 = 0 ⇒ x = −1
(ii) x + 5 = 0 ⇒ x = −5
(iii) −3 + x = 0 ⇒ x = 3
(iv) x + (−8) = 0 ⇒ x = 8
(v) 7 + x = 0 ⇒ x = −7
(vi) x + 0 = 0  ⇒ x = 0

FAQs on Page No.5.12, Negative Numbers And Integers, Class 6, Maths RD Sharma Solutions - RD Sharma Solutions for Class 6 Mathematics

1. What are negative numbers and integers?
Ans. Negative numbers are numbers less than zero, represented with a negative sign (-). Integers, on the other hand, include both positive and negative whole numbers, along with zero.
2. How can negative numbers and integers be represented on a number line?
Ans. Negative numbers can be represented to the left of zero on a number line, while positive numbers are represented to the right of zero. Integers are marked at equal intervals on the number line.
3. How can negative numbers and integers be used in real-life situations?
Ans. Negative numbers and integers can be used in real-life situations such as measuring temperatures below zero, representing losses in financial transactions, or determining positions in sports rankings.
4. Can negative numbers and integers be added or subtracted?
Ans. Yes, negative numbers and integers can be added or subtracted just like positive numbers. When adding or subtracting integers with different signs, we follow the rules of sign and perform the operation accordingly.
5. How do negative numbers and integers relate to everyday situations?
Ans. Negative numbers and integers relate to everyday situations by representing quantities below zero, opposite directions, or opposite values in various contexts. They help us understand and analyze situations involving gains, losses, debts, and many other scenarios.
