Comprehension 3
Read the following story and answer the questions.
Mike, the rooster, was extremely proud of his voice. He used it every morning, after all, to wake up everyone on the farm. If he didn’t crow, no one would be up on time and Farmer Poulton and his work would get delayed.
But Mike had an enemy in the farmhouse. He hated the alarm clock. He had a hen-house full of admiring hens. ‘Why does the farmer want an alarm clock on the farm when I’m here? I’m more reliable than the clock. I wake everyone up on time,’ he told the hens. The hens were very impressed and agreed. ‘You have the most beautiful voice, Mike,’ they said. ‘We all wake up hearing you.’ Mike was so delighted with them that he flew towards the farmhouse. He searched and found the wretched alarm clock in the farmer’s bedroom. He looked all around it but didn’t know what he should do. Finally he simply pushed the clock off the table hoping it was broken for good!
There was no sound from the alarm clock after that. Mike was delighted. But four days later Mike heard the alarm ring again! He was furious. One morning, however, Mike woke up without his voice! He had been so busy showing off that he had walked around in the cold. Now he had a severe cold and couldn’t crow at all! The alarm awoke everyone, and poor Mike sat silently on his roost. He never again said anything nasty about the alarm clock!
