Fishes and their Different Shapes

  • When Ravi goes to the catch the fish, he sees fishes of many different shapes and kinds.
  • Did you know that you can create different fishes by using geometrical shapes?
  • This can be done by using different shapes such as squares and triangles.
  • This shows us just how important shapes are in our lives!

Do all Fishes have the Same Size?

  • Ravi sees fishes all of different sizes everyday.
  •  If a fish is too small, he lets it go so it can grow bigger.
  • Did you know that the smallest fish is about 1 cm long?
  • The biggest fish is the whale shark.
  • It is actually not a whale but is a big, big fish.
  • One whale shark was as long as 18 m. Its weight is about 16000 kg! In comparison, do you know how much do you weigh? The Fish Tale Class 5 Notes Maths Chapter 1

The Fish Tail

What a Catch!

  • Fishermen in their boats, go up and down with the waves to catch fish. Ravi starts his trip when it is still dark in the morning.
  • Ravi goes on a simple boat made from logs of wood.
  • If the sea is rough, with very high tides and a strong wind, then Ravi has a very difficult time.
The Fish Tale Class 5 Notes Maths Chapter 1
  • These log boats do not go very far. If the wind is helpful, they travel about 4 km in one hour.
  • Fishermen can feel the wind and look at the sun to find out which way to go.

Out on the sea, fishermen look for a place where they hope to find a good catch of fish. There they spread their nets. They will have to wait for many hours for the fish to come into their nets.

  • Some boats have motors and go further into the sea. Since they go far out they can catch more fish.
  • Motor boats can travel at the speed of about 20 km in one hour.

Example 1: A log boat travels 4 km in one hour . How much time will it take to go 12 km?

Sol: Time taken by the boat to cover 4 km = 1 hour
Time taken by the boat to cover 12km (4km x 3) = 1 x 3 = 3 hours

Different Types of Boats

Some very big machine boats (trawlers) are also used by fishermen.

  • They go far out and put their big nets deep in the sea. This way they collect a whole lot of fish, leaving very few near the sea shore. They also stay out on the sea for many days.
  • These big machine boats also catch the small baby fish, which have yet to grow up.

Fishermen in the smaller boats always let the baby fish pass through their nets to go back into the sea. They choose a net size in such a way that only the grown up fish are caught.

For hundreds of years fishermen have cared for the sea and its fishes and fished only a little to eat and sell.
They say that if trawlers catch thousands of kilograms of fish everyday, there will be no fish left in the sea.

Some Big, Big Numbers!

  • Do you remember the number 'lakh', which is equal to a hundred thousand?
  • But there are numbers even bigger than that!
  • For example, do you know how many fishworkers are there in our country? About one hundred lakh!
  • We also have a name for this big number: crore

How Many: Motor Boats in the Country

  • There are about two lakh boats in our country. Half of them are without a motor.
  • What is the number of boats with a motor? Let's find out!
  • Two lakh can be written as 2,00,000. Half of two lakh would be 1/2 x 2,00,000 = 1,00,000.
  • In other words, it is one lakh motor boats in the country!

How Many: Big Machine Boats

  • About one fourth of the boats with a motor are big machine boats.
  • How many thousand machine boats are there?
  • Let's calculate!
  • Out of one lakh motor boats, 1/4th of them are big machine boats.
  • This would be 1/4 x 1,00,000 = 25,000!
