Section A: Reading

Q.1. Read the following passage carefully:

The sky blazed with stars. Presently the moon rose. The sight of bear tricks in the dust-the squire front paw and long back one with the shaggy claws-made him glance round uneasily. He had once seen a man who had been mauled by a bear all his face torn away. He quickened his steps.
Soon, on a cliff above a river-bed Sher Singh knew he could go no further without rest. He set Kunwar down gently. Suddenly all Sher Singh’s muscles, shrinking back to their natural position, thrilled with piercing pain, he lay against a tree with his eye shut, recovering.It was then he herd the jostle and squeal, of elephants. Below him on each side of the shallow riverbed, the elephants travelled. He could see the cows and babies and one great old tusker. He was playing his trunk to and fro to learn whatever the breeze could tell him, and suddenly he hesitated.
Sher Singh chilled with fright, with Kunwar to carry, to carry, he could neither climb nor run. Prayer after prayer fled up from his frightened spirit.
The tusker snorted, trumpeted, shook his head. Suddenly, he hurried on angrily up the river-bed, and all the herd with him. They disappeared.

Q.2. Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:
Modern pesticides are like a two-edged sword. On one hand, they save lives. Indeed, through their use, many millions of people in developing nations have escaped the scourge of diseases such as malaria and typhus. These chemicals have also staved off potential famine by halting crop-destroying hordes of locusts in Africa and Middle East. And they’ve spared millions from malnutrition and premature death by helping to boost global food production.
But on the other hand, many pesticides like Aldrin, Lindane and DDT are so poisonous that they have become a growing peril in the Third Worked. “They’re getting completely out of control in developing countries,” charges attorney Jacob Scherr of the Natural Resources Defense Councils, a US environment organization that monitors government agencies. “They’re being used indiscriminately. Because they are constant threat to human health and environment most of these pesticides have either been pulled off from the market or tightly restricted in the US. However, there are no current figures on the amount of banned or restricted chemical shipped abroad. The US Environmental Protection Agency knows little about most of these unregistered products shipped abroad.
The US is not alone in selling such pesticides to the developing nations. Most of the rest come from Western Europe, Eastern Europe and Japan.
All pesticides involve real or potential hazards. For peasants in Guatemala putting a pesticide in their water doesn’t matter if it’s registered or unregistered. Its poison by definition but the problem is lack of knowledge, lack of training on the part of the applicators, lack of awareness of what these chemicals are and how dangerous they can be.”
Lou Falcon is an entomologist from the University of California and a veteran of pest control projects in Central America says, “You can buy DDT or parathion over the counter in the little market shops. They’ll ladle it out just like wheat or rice.” Sometimes highly toxic pesticides are sold in paper bags or used in coke and beer bottles. In Guyana, for example three inebriated peasants died when they mistakenly drank a solution of malathion from such beer bottles.

Ans:
They are uneducated and unaware of the danger of consuming these pesticides. These pesticides are easily available in market and sold in used beer bottles which are consumed directly.

Drugs have become very common in society. It is a social evil which makes the person hollow from inside. Drugs are of many kinds, but basically the harmful ones are the narcotic drugs. Person once used to it cannot come out of the habit. He or she becomes addicted to it and it becomes impossible to pass a day without taking the dose. The body becomes so accustomed to it that without it the person feels lifeless. These drugs along with harming the health also harm the pocket. They are very expensive. People try to get it by hook or by crook and if they don’t have money, they indulge in wrong activities like theft and selling off their own expensive things. These days youth is becoming addicted to it. They are harming not only themselves, their families but also the society. A watchful eye should be kept on the people who sell it and strict actions should be taken against them. People addicted to drugs should be sent to rehabilitation centres before it becomes loo late.

Good Morning
Respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends. Today, I, Garvit am going to express my views on the topic ‘Machines are good slaves but a bad master’.
We are living in the age of machines. We cannot imagine our lives without fans, vehicles, electrical appliances etc. but it is sad that we are becoming its slaves, because we are becoming addicted to the comforts these things provide us. They are simple machines; when they stop working we become helpless.
Today even to cover a small distance we need a vehicle; we don’t want to walk. If there is no electricity we behave as though we cannot live without it. Most of our household works come to a stop. But it is really sad that we don’t think that due to these habits we are putting ourselves into trouble. We are being attacked by many diseases as we don’t do any physical exercise. These diseases are obesity, diabetes, heart attack etc. at a very young age and many of these diseases are fatal.
Therefore, we all should use machines judiciously. You should be its master. It should work as your slave. Thank You.

Section B : Writing and Grammar

Q.5. Read the outlines of a story given below. Write it in full using these outlines and your own ideas. Assign a suitable title to it:

There was a farmer. His name was Charan Das. He had four sons Ramesh, Deepak, Jagat and Ravi. They all kept on quarrelling with one another. Charan Das was very worried as he was getting old. He thought that if his sons will not live unitedly, they will waste the entire wealth. He planned to teach them a lesson. He called his sons to him and gave them one stick each asking them to break it. The boys were surprised at this and could easily break the stick given to them. Then the farmer gave them each a pile of four sticks and asked them to break, no one could do it.
He told his sons that this shows that if they will fight, they will be alone and easily cheated by others but if they will stay together they can never be cheated, rather they will be strong and do a good business.
The sons realised their mistake and promised never to quarrel with one another but stay united. This made them happy.

The Goose that Laid a Golden Egg
Once there lived a poor farmer in a village. He was very hardworking and honest. God took pity on him. He gave him a goose and said, “Look after it properly. It will help you.” The farmer accepted the gift. He took the goose to his home. He fed it and put it in a cabin where dogs could not harm it. Next morning he was very happy to find that the goose had laid a golden egg. He sold the egg and bought sweets and other eatables.
He gave up his work and devoted all his time in looking after the goose. It laid a golden egg every day. Soon the farmer became rich.
The farmer was very happy now. He gave parties to show off his riches. He invited the neighbours. Some of them were jealous of his sudden prosperity. One of them suggested, “Why wait for an egg every day ? Kill the goose and take all the eggs at once.” The farmer also became greedy. He did not think twice. He took a knife and killed the goose. To his shock and surprise, he did not find even a single egg. The farmer now repented on his folly, but it was too late.

Before the giant waves slammed into the coast of India and Sri Lanka, the wind and domestic animals seemed to know what was about to happen. They fled to safety. Elephants screamed and ran to higher grounds, dogs refused to go outdoors. Flamingoes abandoned their low-lying breeding areas and zoo-animals rushed into their shelters.
(ii) Why did prophet and wizard not guess about the magic in the poet’s eye?
Ans: 
Prophet and wizard did not guess about that magic in the poet’s eyes because this was the radiance in his life and eyes due to the blessings of God.

(v) “For a moment James wondered if he had done his sums right.” Why was James doubtful about his sums and calculations?
Ans: 
James was doubtful about his sums and calculations because it was a peaceful star-studded night. It was unbelievable that the calamity of the future was to occur on such a peaceful night.

When he felt the earthquake, do you think Ignesious was immediately worried about a tsunami ? Give reasons for your answer. Which sentence in the text tells you that the Ignesious family did not have any time to discuss and plan their course of action after the tsunami struck ?
Ans: Once I shared a different opinion with my friend. It was my 10th birthday, the cake had ten candles on it. The guests, my parents, relatives, brothers and sisters all were singing the birthday song. My closest friend, Aman was standing next to me. As I cut the cake, I was supposed to blow off the candles. Suddenly Aman stopped me. He insisted on one of the candles to be lighted till the last before being blown off. I got angry and exchanged bad words : because both of us were adamant on our point. Later, I repented when my mother told me that one lighted candle is to be kept in the prayer room and is symbolic of your long life. Such a terrible scene was created. If only I had tried to listen to the whole concept of Aman, we would had never quarrelled. I said sorry to Aman and realised my mistake.

No, I don’t think he was immediately worried about the Tsunami. He only felted an earthquake. To protect his TV set from falling down, he kept it on the floor. No other measures were taken by him.
Ignesious family did not get any time to discuss and plan their course of action. We get to know this as they did not do anything in a planned manner. Half of them ran in one direction while the rest ran in the other. They were in a state of chaos.
