FAQs on Internet Protocol: Very Short Answer Type Questions - Computer Application: Class 10

1. What is the Internet Protocol (IP) and how does it work?
Ans. The Internet Protocol (IP) is a set of rules that governs the sending and receiving of data packets over the internet. It provides a unique address, known as an IP address, to each device connected to the internet. When data is sent from one device to another, it is divided into small packets and each packet is tagged with the IP addresses of the source and destination devices. These packets are then sent independently through various routers and networks until they reach their destination, where they are reassembled into the original data.
2. How is an IP address assigned to a device?
Ans. An IP address is assigned to a device by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) or by a local network administrator. There are two types of IP addresses: dynamic and static. In the case of dynamic IP addresses, the ISP uses a pool of addresses and assigns them to devices temporarily. These addresses may change each time the device connects to the internet. On the other hand, static IP addresses are manually assigned to devices and remain constant over time. They are typically used for servers or devices that require a fixed address.
3. What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
Ans. IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) and IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) are two different versions of the Internet Protocol. IPv4 uses a 32-bit address format and supports around 4.3 billion unique IP addresses. However, due to the growing number of devices connected to the internet, IPv4 addresses are running out. IPv6, on the other hand, uses a 128-bit address format and supports an enormous number of unique IP addresses, approximately 340 undecillion. IPv6 also offers other improvements, such as enhanced security and more efficient routing.
4. How does the Internet Protocol ensure reliable delivery of data?
Ans. The Internet Protocol itself does not guarantee reliable delivery of data. It is a best-effort protocol, meaning it tries its best to deliver data packets but does not provide any mechanisms for error detection, correction, or retransmission. Instead, higher-level protocols, such as the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), are responsible for ensuring reliable delivery. TCP adds features like error checking, sequencing, and acknowledgment of received packets to ensure that data is delivered accurately and in the correct order.
5. Can IP addresses reveal personal information?
Ans. IP addresses alone do not directly reveal personal information such as names, addresses, or phone numbers. However, IP addresses can provide general information about a device's location and the Internet Service Provider (ISP) associated with it. In some cases, this information may be used to approximate the user's geographical location. However, to obtain specific personal information, additional data such as logs or cooperation from ISPs would be required, which is subject to legal and privacy considerations.
