Question 1: Find the area of the following figure :

Ans: Divide the figure into three parts as shown

Fig i :Figure I is a square of side 2 m.

So, area of figure I = (2 × 2) m= 4 m2

Fig ii : Figure II is a rectangle whose length is

2 m + 2 m + 2 m = 6 m and

breadth = 2 m.

So, area of figure II = (6 × 2) m2 = 12 m2

Fig iii :Figure III is a square of side 2 m.

So, area of figure III = (2 × 2) m2 = 4 m2

Hence, area of the given figure = 4 m2 + 12 m2 + 4 m2 = 20 m2

Question 2: Find the area of the triangle shown on the graph paper.

Ans:Number of complete squares (1 to 23) enclosed by the figure = 23

Number of more than half squares (marked as 7) enclosed by the figure = 4.

Number of half-squares (marked as 3) enclosed by the figure = 6

Hence, area of the triangle = (23 + 4 + 1/2 + 6) sq. cm = 30 sq cm

Q3: Bhanu walks around a square park of side 120 m. If he take 2 rounds of the park, how much distance does he cover?

Ans:Distance covered in one round = Perimeter of the park

= 4 × 120 m

= 480 m

Distance covered in 2 rounds = 2 × 480 m

= 960 m

Bhanu covers a distance of 960 m.

Q4:  Find the cost of tiling an office 30 m long a 25 m broad at the rate of ` 4 per sq. m. Tiling the office means tiling the area of the office.

Ans:Tiling the office means tiling the area of the office.
Area = Length x Breadth

= 30 m × 25 m

= 750 sq. m

Cost of tiling 1 sq. m = ` 4

Cost of tiling 750 sq. m = 750 × ` 4 = ` 300

The cost of tiling the office is ` 3000.

Q5: How many square tiles of side 10 cm will be required to tile a path of dimensions 360 cm by 90 cm?

Ans: Area of the path = length × breadth

= 360 cm × 90 cm

= 32400 sq. cm

Area of a tile = side × side

= 10 cm × 10 cm

= 100 sq. cm

Number of tiles needed = Area of the path ÷ Area of a tile

= 32400 ÷ 100 = 324

324 tiles will be required to tile the path.

Ans:Count the number of small squares that cover each rectangle. This will give you the area of the rectangle in square centimetres. Also, write the length and breadth of each rectangle in centimetres.

(iv) The perimeter of a square is 16 cm. Its area is ________________cm2.

Ans:(i)Area=length×width=6cm×8cm=48cm2
(ii)Side =Perimeter/4 =32cm/4 =8cm
(iii) Perimeter=3×side length=3×7cm=21cm
(iv)Side=Perimeter/4 =16cm/4 =4cm
Then, calculate the area of the square (since the area of a square is side length squared): Area= Side x Side = 4 x 4 = 16 cm2
