Growth Habits of Plants Around Us

Growth habits refer to change in the plant’s height, shape, and the kind of growth it undergoes. 

• We see plants of different shapes and sizes around us. Some are tall while some are short. 

• Besides the height, stem thickness, delicacy also varies.
• Some live for many years while some live only for a few months.

Let us classify plants on the basis of their growth habits.

Trees

Trees are tall and strong plants. 

• They have a hard and thick stem called the trunk. 
• Trees usually live for many years.

Shrubs

Some plants have small woody stems. 

• They give a bushy appearance. 
• They are called shrubs. 
• They are smaller than the trees. 
• They generally live for a few years.

Some plants are small and have soft stems.

• They are called herbs. 
• Most of the herbs live only for a few months.

Climbers and Creepers

Some plants have weak stems. They need support to grow. Hence, such plants take the support of a stick or a wall. These plants are called climbers.

• Some plants with weak stems crawl along the ground. These are called creepers.

Plants Grow Everywhere

Plants grow almost everywhere.

• We find plants on land as well as in water. 
• Some of them grow in hot places while some grow in cold places.

Some plants, like the pitcher plant, make a sticky, sugary liquid that attracts

insects. When an insect sits on the plant, it sticks to it. The plant then traps

the insect and eats it!
