Pinaka Rocket System

Context:

DRDO successfully test fired Enhanced Pinaka Rocket.

About Pinaka:

  • Pinaka is a multiple rocket launcher produced in India and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the Indian Army.
  • The enhanced range version of the Pinaka Rocket System can destroy targets at distances up to 45 kms, as shown in the tests.
  • The rocket system has been developed jointly by Pune based Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) with manufacturing support from M/s Economic Explosives Limited, Nagpur.
  • The development of the Enhanced Pinaka system was taken up to achieve longer range performance.

India’s first indigenous Aircraft Carrier

Context:
Defence Minister reviewed progress of construction of first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier at Kochi.

Details:

  • India’s first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) is being built by M/s Cochin Shipyard Ltd., at Kochi, Kerala.
  • The IAC would be commissioned as INS Vikrant in the first half of 2022, which would be the most potent sea-based asset.
  • The ship shall operate MiG-29K fighter aircraft, Kamov-31 Air Early Warning Helicopters, the soon to be inducted MH-60R multi-role helicopter and the indigenously manufactured Advanced Light Helicopters.
  • It would offer an incomparable military instrument with its ability to project Air Power over long distances, including Air Interdiction, Anti-Surface Warfare, offensive and defensive Counter-Air, Airborne Anti-Submarine Warfare and Airborne Early Warning.
  • The Defence Minister stated that the IAC has nearly 75 per cent indigenous content – from design to steel used in construction to key weapons and sensors.

ITAT e-DWAR

Context:
ITAT e-DWAR launched by union Law Minister.

About ITAT e-DWAR:

  • It is the e-filing portal of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT). The portal would enable the parties to file their Appeals, Miscellaneous Applications, documents, paper books, etc., electronically.
  • The portal will enhance the accessibility, accountability and transparency in the day to day working of the ITAT.
  • It would not only result in economization of the use of paper, savings in costs, but also rationalization of the fixation of cases leading to quicker disposal of cases.

About the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT):

  • The ITAT is a quasi-judicial institution that specializes in dealing with appeals under the Direct Taxes Acts.
  • It was formed in 1941.
  • The orders passed by the ITAT are final, an appeal lies to the High Court only if a substantial question of law arises for determination.
  • Starting with just six benches, currently, the ITAT has 63 Benches at 27 different stations covering almost all the cities having a seat of the High Court.
  • The ITAT draws inspiration from its motto ‘Nishpaksh Sulabh Satvar Nyay’, which means impartial, easy and speedy justice.
  • The ITAT is referred to as ‘Mother Tribunal’ being the oldest Tribunal in the country.
  • More importantly, it is the success of the ITAT, which has prompted the Government of India to constitute similar Appellate Tribunals for indirect taxes i.e., Customs, Excise, Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT), Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), Railway Claims Tribunal, Foreign Exchange Appellate Board, etc.

Day of the Seafarer 2021

Context:
25 June is celebrated as the ‘Day of the Seafarer’ every year.

About Day of the Seafarer:

  • On this day, people honour seafarers and recognize the invaluable contribution they make to international trade and the world economy.
  • Day of the Seafarer celebration was first started in 2010 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
  • The theme for 2021 is “Seafarers: At the core of shipping’s future”.

National Convention on Prevention of Maternal, Adolescent and Childhood Obesity

Context:

NITI Aayog convened the National Convention on Prevention of Maternal, Adolescent and Childhood Obesity.

Details:

  • The convention was organised by NITI Aayog in recognition of the ‘silent epidemic’ of obesity targeting more and more Indians recently, especially women and children.
  • The National Family Health Survey 5 showed a spurt in the incidence of obesity.
  • In the convention, global experts, representatives from UN bodies, central ministries and national research institutions presented their evidence regarding increasing prevalence of obesity and presented best practices for obesity reduction.
  • NITI Aayog has said that a consensus emerged on the need for a whole of Government and whole of society approach in tackling the twin nutrition challenge of obesity and under nutrition.
  • It said that an urgent need for adopting strategies related to fiscal measures, regulating front-of-package labelling, promoting healthy diet, physical activity and lifestyle options emerged as key themes for future deliberations and actions.
