National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI)

What’s in the news?
The National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) celebrated its 18th anniversary.
Details:

• NIXI will provide a personalized e-mail with 10GB space to every .IN user.
  • This e-mail will be available on demand. A user may approach www.registry.in to get a free personalized e-mail.
• Starting with five languages, the. भारत domain is now available in all 22 official languages. India is the only country to provide domain in 22 official Indian Languages.
• NIXI is offering a free IDN (Internationalized Domain Name) in any of the preferred 22 official Indian languages along with every IN domain booked by the registrant.
• Applicant will also get a free email in local language.
• This offer has been created to stimulate the adoption of भारत (IDN) domain name and proliferation of local language content.

About NIXI:

• NIXI is a not for profit organization under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013, formed in 2003.
• NIXI was set up for peering of ISPs (internet service providers) among themselves for the purpose of routing the domestic traffic within the country, instead of taking it all the way to US/abroad.
• This results in better quality of service (reduced latency) and reduced bandwidth charges for ISPs by saving on international bandwidth.

NIXI Activities:

• Spreading internet technologies to Indian citizens through
• Internet Exchanges through which the internet data is exchanged amongst ISPs and between ISPs and CDNs.
• IN Registry: managing and operation of IN country code domain and भारत IDN domain for India.
• IRINN: managing and operating Internet protocol (IPv4/IPv6).

INRegistry

• .IN is India’s Country Code Top Level domain (ccTLD).
• The Govt. of India delegated the operations of INRegistry to NIXI in 2004.
• The INRegistry operates and manages India’s .IN ccTLD.
• IRINN is a division functioning under NIXI and provides allocation and registration services of Internet Protocol addresses (IPv4 & IPv6) and Autonomous System numbers to its Affiliates.
  • Indian Registry for Internet Names and Numbers (IRINN) in India provides allocation and registration services of IP addresses and AS numbers.

Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS)

Context:
50 KWP Solar roof top under the IPDS scheme inaugurated in Solan as part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’.
About the Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS):

• The scheme was launched in 2014 with the following objectives:
  • Strengthening of sub-transmission and distribution networks in the urban areas.
  • Metering of distribution transformers/feeders/consumers in the urban areas.
  • IT enablement of distribution sector and strengthening of distribution network.
  • Schemes for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and IT enablement of balance urban towns.
  • Underground cabling.
• The scheme is under the Ministry of Power, GOI and works in the urban power distribution sector.
• All discoms will be eligible for financial assistance under the scheme.
• Power Finance Corporation Limited (PFC) has been designated as the Nodal Agency for operationalization and implementation of the scheme under the overall guidance of the Power Ministry.

Biotech-KISAN Programme

Context:
DBT issued a Special Call under Biotech KISAN Programme for improving Agriculture Productivity in the North East Region.

About the Biotech-KISAN Programme:

• It is a farmer-centric scheme for farmers, developed by and with farmers under the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology.
• It is a pan-India program, following a hub-and-spoke model and stimulates entrepreneurship and innovation in farmers and empowers women farmers.
• It identifies and promotes local farm leadership in both genders. Such leadership helps to develop science-based farming besides facilitating the transfer of knowledge.
• The objective is to understand the problems of water, soil, seed and market faced by the farmers and provide simple solutions to them.
• The programme links available science and technology to the farm by first understanding the problem of the local farmer and then providing scientific solutions to those problems.
• The Biotech-KISAN hubs are expected to fulfil the technology required to generate agriculture and bio-resource related jobs and better livelihood ensuring biotechnological benefits to small and marginal farmers.
