Passage

The human intellect is said to be so constituted that general ideas arise by abstraction from particular observations, and therefore come after them in point of time. If this is what actually occurs, as happens in the case of a man who has to depend solely upon his own experience for what he learns — who has no teacher and no book — such a man knows quite well which of his particular observations belong to and are represented by each of his general ideas. He has a perfect acquaintance with both sides of his experience, and accordingly, he treats everything that comes in his way from a right standpoint. This might be called the natural method of education.
Contrarily, the artificial method is to hear what other people say, to learn and to read, and so to get your head crammed full of general ideas before you have any sort of extended acquaintance with the world as it is, and as you may see it for yourself. You will be told that the particular observations which go to make these general ideas will come to you later on in the course of experience; but until that time arrives, you apply your general ideas wrongly, you judge men and things from a wrong standpoint, you see them in a wrong light, and treat them in a wrong way. So it is that education perverts the mind.
This explains why it so frequently happens that, after a long course of learning and reading, we enter upon the world in our youth, partly with an artless ignorance of things, partly with wrong notions about them; so that our demeanor savors at one moment of a nervous anxiety, at another of a mistaken confidence. The reason of this is simply that our head is full of general ideas which we are now trying to turn to some use, but which we hardly ever apply rightly. This is the result of acting in direct opposition to the natural development of the mind by obtaining general ideas first, and particular observations last: it is putting the cart before the horse. Instead of developing the child’s own faculties of discernment, and teaching it to judge and think for itself, the teacher uses all his energies to stuff its head full of the ready-made thoughts of other people. The mistaken views of life, which spring from a false application of general ideas, have afterwards to be corrected by long years of experience; and it is seldom that they are wholly corrected. This is why so few men of learning are possessed of common-sense, such as is often to be met within people who have had no instruction at all.

1. What is the CAT exam?
Ans. The Common Admission Test (CAT) is a computer-based entrance exam conducted in India for admission into various management programs offered by Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and other prestigious business schools. It is a highly competitive exam that tests candidates' aptitude in areas such as Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability, Reading Comprehension, Logical Reasoning, and Data Interpretation.
2. How can I apply for the CAT exam?
Ans. To apply for the CAT exam, you need to visit the official website of the conducting body and register for the exam. The registration process usually begins in August or September every year. You will be required to fill in your personal details, academic qualifications, and choose your preferred exam center. After successful registration, you will receive a unique user ID and password to log in and complete the application form. Make sure to pay the application fee and submit all the required documents before the specified deadline.
3. What is the exam pattern of the CAT exam?
Ans. The CAT exam consists of three sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability. The total duration of the exam is 180 minutes, with each section having a time limit of 60 minutes. The exam is conducted in a computer-based format, where candidates have to answer multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and non-MCQs. The number of questions and the difficulty level may vary from year to year.
4. How can I prepare for the CAT exam effectively?
Ans. Effective preparation for the CAT exam requires a combination of hard work, smart study strategies, and consistent practice. Here are a few tips to help you prepare effectively: 1. Understand the exam pattern and syllabus thoroughly. 2. Create a study plan and allocate time for each section. 3. Practice previous year question papers and mock tests to familiarize yourself with the exam format. 4. Focus on building conceptual clarity and problem-solving skills. 5. Read newspapers, magazines, and books to improve your reading comprehension and vocabulary. 6. Join coaching classes or online courses for expert guidance and additional resources. 7. Stay motivated, maintain a healthy routine, and take regular breaks to avoid burnout.
5. How is the CAT exam scored?
Ans. The CAT exam follows a scaled scoring system. Each correct answer is awarded three marks, while each incorrect answer attracts a negative marking of one mark. However, for non-MCQs, there is no negative marking for wrong answers. The raw scores obtained by candidates are converted into a scaled score through a normalization process to adjust for variations in difficulty levels across different exam sessions. The final score is presented as a percentile, indicating the candidate's performance relative to other test-takers.
