Then we saw that it was a baby bear that had been riding on its mother’s back when the sudden shot had killed her. The little creature ran around its prostrate parent making a pitiful noise. I ran up to it to attempt a capture. It scooted into the sugarcane field. Following it with my companions, I was at last able to grab it by the scruff of its neck while it snapped and tried to scratch me with its long, hooked claws. We put it in one of the gunny – bags we had brought and when I got back to Bangalore I duly presented it to my wife.
(i) Why did the little creature run around making pitiful noise?

The little creature ran around making pitiful noises because its mother had been shot and it lay prostrate on the road.

(ii) Where did the bear scoot into and why?

The little bear scooted into the sugarcane field to save itself from being shot by the people.

Q.2. How did the narrator’s wife react on receiving the sloth bear as a present?

On receiving the sloth bear as a present, his wife was delighted. She at once put a colored ribbon around its neck. When she discovered that it was a male animal, she named it Bruno.


Q.3. How did Bruno spend his early days at home?

Bruno became attached to the author’s wife. He also became familiar with the Alsatians also. He liked to play with the children in the neighborhood. Bruno was left loose in the bungalow when he was young and he roamed freely in the kitchen and also slept in their beds.

The vet gave him 10 cc of anti-dote immediately. But it did not affect much, so he gave another shot of it. After ten minutes, Bruno could move his arms and legs and a little later, he got up fine and had a great feed.

Bruno, in a very short time, had become familiar with everybody around the house. He used to roam freely in the house. Once he entered the author’s library and accidently ate poison which he had kept there to kill the rats and mice. Paralysis set in to such an extent that Bruno could not even stand straight on his feet. But he, somehow, managed to reach the authors wife. She called out the author’s name and they immediately took him to a vet. The vet on seeing Bruno’s condition asked what kind of poison he had swallowed. When the author told him that it was barium carbonate, he started searching his medicine books. He brought syringes and medicines and gave a 10 cc shot of antidote to Bruno. But it gave no result so he gave another shot. Soon Bruno could move his arms and legs and about after half an hour, he got up fine and had a great feed.

I will begin with Bruno, my wife’s pet sloth bear. I got him for her by accident. Two years ago we were passing through the sugarcane fields near Mysore. People were driving away the wild pigs from the fields by shooting at them. Some were shot and some escaped. We thought that everything was over when suddenly a black sloth bear came out panting in the hot sun.
(i) How did the author find the sloth bear?

The author found the sloth bear in the sugarcane fields by accident, while returning to Mysore.

(ii) Why did the author say that he found Bruno by accident?

He said so because when they were clearing the way from wild pigs, suddenly a sloth bear came and stood in their way.

(iii) Why were the people shooting the wild pigs?

The people were shooting the wild pigs to drive them away from their path.

(iv) How did the black sloth bear come out?

The sloth bear came out suddenly, panting in the hot sun.


Q.7. How did the author get the sloth bear?

The author was passing through the sugarcane fields. His companion shot the bear on the spot. This baby was riding on its mother’s back. The author got hold of it and brought it home.


Q.8. How did Bruno start his journey at the author’s home?

Bruno soon made himself comfortable in that new environment. He started drinking milk from the bottle and within another few days he started eating and drinking everything like porridge, eggs bread, chocolates and drank beer, buttermilk etc.

Bruno accidently ate poison which the narrator had put in his library to kill the rats. Paralysis set in to such an extent that Bruno could not stand straight. He dragged himself towards the author’s wife and then they took him to the doctor.

His friends were driving away the wild pigs when suddenly a sloth bear came out panting in the sun. They shot him also. The poor animal dropped down dead. They were surprised to see a baby bear at the back of the dead mother. The little bear ran around its dead mother making pitiful noises. They were able to grab him and put it safely in a gunny bag. On returning to Bangalore, he presented it to his wife who was just delighted to see the baby bear. She immediately put a colored ribbon around its neck and discovering that it was a male animal, named him Bruno. Soon they got attached to each other. Bruno also made himself comfortable in that environment and started eating and drinking like human beings.
