Introduction


In this type of question in the examination, the answer is given and a question has to be made on the basis of it. Questions can be made in two ways. Huh-

  1. Using Helping Verbs.
  2. By using interrogative words (What, where, why, When, How, Whom, Who, Which, How many, How much etc.).

Forming a question using Auxiliary Verb: If the sentence starts with Yes or No in the answer, then the question

is made using Helping Verb. Its sequence will be as follows –

Helping Verb + Subject + Main Verb + ………?

  • If the auxiliary verb is given in the sentence, then it is brought first in the sentence according to the subject. If the auxiliary verb is not given in the sentence, then the auxiliary verb is brought according to the form of the verb. With the first form, Do Yo Does is brought according to the doer. If the second form of the verb is given in the sentence, then Did is used. With Did brings the first form of the verb. He, she, it, they and name do not change.
  • While framing the question, the Pronoun of the subject given in the answer also changes. If there is a first person in the answer, then while making the question, change it to the second person. And if there is a second person, then change it to the first person. like-

Examples:

Answer. Yes, I learn my lesson.

Ques. Do you learn your lesson?

Answer. No, I did not buy a book.

Ques. Did you buy a book?

Answer. Yes, you can take your book.

Ques. Can I take my book?

________ to see the fair ?

Answer. Yes, I go to see the fair.

Ques. Do you go to see the fair?

________ homework ? ।

Answer. Yes, I am doing my homework.

Ques. Are you doing your homework?

________ to Delhi yesterday ?

Answer. No, I did not go to Delhi yesterday.

Ques. Did you go to Delhi yesterday?

Questions formed from interrogative words - If yes or no have come in the answer, then interrogative words are used while making their questions. These interrogative words give information about getting some kind of information. Its sequence is as follows –

Question Word + Helping Verb + Subject + Main Verb + ………. ,

Example:

Where _______ ?

Answer. I am going to the market.

Ques. Where are you going ?

When _______?

Answer. I went to his house yesterday.

Ques. When did you go to his house?


Different interrogative words are used for different information:

  • Where (Where) – This gives location related information.
  • what (what) – It is used for general inquiry as a subject or object.
  • When (when) – It is used for information of time.
  • why (why) – It is used to ask reason.
  • which (which) – It is used to choose between persons or things.
  • How (How) – It is used to know the way, condition, condition or means.
  • Whom (to whom) – It is used to ask the deeds.
  • How far - It is used to know the distance.
  • How old (how old) - It is used to know the age.
  • How many - It is used to know the number of persons or things.
  • How much - It is used to know the quantity of an object or substance.

Example:

(a) Q. Who ________?

Answer. The watchman keeps the key.

Question: Who keeps the key?

(Subject is removed and who is written in its place)

(b) Q. Whom ________?

Answer. I saw the principal there.

Question: Whom did you see there?

(The rest of the sentence is changed to interrogative by removing the object.)

(c) Q. Whose scooter________ ?

Answer. I brought Ram’s scooter.

Question: Whose scooter did you bring?
