Jawaharlal Nehru Port

Why in News?
Recently, Jawaharlal Nehru Port became the first major port of the country to become a 100% Landlord port of India having all berths being operated on PPP model.

About Jawaharlal Nehru Port

• Navi Mumbai, where it is located, is India’s top port for handling containers, handling around half of all the country’s main ports’ volume of containerized cargo.
•  JNP was established in 1989, and in the three decades since it has been in operation, it has evolved from a bulk-cargo terminal to the top container port in the nation. It is currently ranked 26th among the top 100 global ports (as per Lloyds List Top 100 Ports 2021 Report).
•  With its cutting-edge amenities, welcoming environment, and superb rail and road connectivity to the hinterland, JNP satisfies all international requirements.
• It is presently handling 9000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) capacity vessels and with the upgradation, it can handle 12200 TEUs capacity vessels.

What is Landlord Port?

• In this model, private enterprises handle port operations, primarily cargo-handling activities, while the publicly run port authority serves as a regulatory body and a landlord.
• Here, the infrastructure is leased to private companies who install their own equipment to handle cargo and provide and maintain their own superstructure, while the port authority retains ownership of the port.
• In return, the landlord port gets a share of the revenue from the private entity.

Jal Jeevan Mission

Why in News?
Burhanpur also known as the ‘Darwaza of Dakhin’ in Madhya Pradesh becomes the first ‘Har Ghar Jal’ certified district in the country.

• Burhanpur is the only district in the country where people from each of 254 villages have declared their villages as ‘Har Ghar Jal’ through a resolution passed by Gram Sabhas, certifying that all people in the villages have access to safe drinking water through taps, ensuring that ‘No One is Left Out’.

About Jal Jeevan Mission

• Jal Jeevan Mission, a central government initiative under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, aims to ensure access of piped water for every household in India.
• National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) was restructured and subsumed into Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – to provide Functional Household Tap Water (FHTC) to every rural household with service level at the rate of 55 lpcd i.e., Har Ghar Nal Se Jal (HGNSJ) by 2024.

Implications

• Supply of water to all households is a basic necessity
• Reduction in water borne diseases which was due to due to consumption of substandard water

Challenges

• Critical situation of Decrease in ground water table.
• Water demand and supply is a miss match
• Contamination of local ground level sources of water like, ponds lakes and wells.
• Sustaining the provision of water to all households is a challenge, not just starting it.
