The Smart Cities Mission is a transformational vision. It was launched in 2015 by PM Modi with a vision to bring about a paradigm shift in the practice of urban development. 100 cities were chosen in the initial phase through a series of events between 2016 and 2018. The mission is aimed at improving the quality of life of the people through technological advancements that lead to smart outcomes along with local development. Future aspirant cities should look to sustainable and inclusive development as the model of development. It is a mission that is centrally supported and receives funding from the State, the Center, and other sources. The ease of life, national urban digital mission, streets for people challenge, cleanliness, and other factors are commonly used to evaluate cities. Now, the administration wants to expand the mission to more than 100 cities.
The target faces a variety of difficulties. Currently, the review reveals that just 50 percent of the scheduled projects have been finished. Better management is required because some locations operate without boards, lack coordination, etc. The second issue, which is also largely related to the epidemic, is financial. As a result, both the Center and the majority of state and local governments are having trouble raising money, transferring it to SPVs, and effectively utilising it.Technology and Data Protection is also a huge responsibility. However, more projects are being identified and proper training is being expedited. The process of fund transfer between the Centre and the State is being made smoother. The government is working on an integrated approach of information, communication, management and preparedness. Regular meetings and updates are also being taken seriously. If this goes well in the long term, things will start taking shape as planned.
