Most of the achievements in space science are made by USSR‘s Soviet Space Program and America‘s National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), but after undertaking a number of landmark missions, India‘s Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has emerged as a leading space agency which not only registers India‘s presence in space science but also leads the world in a range of space missions. India became the first country to successfully complete mission to Mars in its very first attempt becoming the fourth country to successfully undertake a mission to Mars.
ISRO successfully tested the crew module aboard the GSLV MK3, which will put India in the special group of space cruising nations capable of taking humans to space. The Chandrayaan-1 mission made the stunning discovery of water on Moon. This February, ISRO created history with the launch of PSLV-C37/Cartosat-2 series satellite. The highest number of satellites launched in a single mission was 37, a record that Russia had achieved in 2014. The US space agency NASA launched 29 from a single rocket, but ISRO‘s 104 is the biggest number.
In India, ISRO has also aided the advancement of research and scientific education. Science education is encouraged and promoted through ISRO's own lunar and extraterrestrial missions as well as other scientific endeavours. The development of heavy lift launchers, human spaceflight projects, reusable launch vehicles, semi-cryogenic engines, single and two stage to orbit vehicles, development and use of composite materials for space applications, etc. are all being pursued by ISRO in an effort to optimise and improve its technologies in response to the needs and aspirations of the nation.
