As close neighbors, India and Nepal share unique ties of friendship and cooperation characterized by an open border and deep-rooted people-to-people contacts of kinship and culture. Nepal shares a border of over 1850 km with five Indian states – Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. There has been a long tradition of free movement of people across the border between both nations. The multifaceted relations between the two countries have been given a renewed momentum in the last few years through intensified high-level political exchanges and regular meetings of bilateral mechanisms across diverse sectors of cooperation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Lumbini in Nepal. This is considered to be a short but significant visit. His Nepali counterpart Sher Bahadur Deuba had also visited India in April this year.
