Describe a picture or photograph in your home | Speaking for IELTS PDF Download

You should say:

  • What is in the photo?
  • Where this photo is in your home?
  • How this picture was taken?
  • And explain what this photo means to you.

Sample Answer:

  • Possibly, photographs are ideal for capturing moments and retaining them for long. Here, I would like to mention a family photograph hung on my bedroom wall. This photograph takes me back to the good old days and is the most cherished memory.
  • The photograph was taken in 2006 when I was 12 years old. The picture was taken in a park where I had gone for a short picnic with my parents and elder sister. In the photo, all of us are sitting on the grass. The garden behind us was in full bloom; thus, the background emphasizes a rich riot of colours. All of us are smiling in the picture, and it reveals the happiest times that we have lived as a family.
  • My sister and I were sitting cross-legged on the ground while my parents were on their knees behind us. My father had the widest smile out of all four of us. We had asked somebody in the park to click this picture. And, evidently, he did a good job.
  • The only reason why this photograph is unique to me is that it was our last happy family picture. Just a year after, my sister passed away because of a brain hemorrhage. Whenever I look at the picture, it fills me with many feelings, especially an accumulation of sadness and happiness.

Follow-ups
Q1: Why do you think people keep photographs in their homes?
Ans:
People keep photographs in their homes because they help preserve memories. Photographs capture special moments, and they allow people to reminisce about happy times spent with family and friends. They also provide a way to remember milestones, like birthdays, vacations, or other significant events.

Q2: Do you think photographs are more meaningful now than in the past?
Ans:
In a way, yes. Nowadays, with digital photography, people can take countless photos and store them easily. However, in the past, photographs were more precious since they were printed and often required special occasions. But today, the ability to instantly share photos with others has made them even more meaningful in terms of staying connected.

Q3: How do you think the way we take photographs has changed over time?
Ans:
The way we take photographs has changed significantly with the advent of smartphones and digital cameras. In the past, people used film cameras, and every shot was precious due to the limited number of photos they could take. Today, we can take hundreds of pictures without worrying about the cost, and many editing tools are available to enhance our photos.

Q4: What role do photographs play in your family?
Ans:
In my family, photographs are a way to celebrate our history and bond over shared memories. We often look through old family albums to recall fun moments and past experiences. It’s a way to keep our traditions and memories alive, especially for younger generations who may not remember all the events depicted in the photos.
