Introduction

Have you ever wondered,  when the sun shines, it's like a giant flashlight in space. Now, just like when you stand in the light and your shadow appears on the ground, the Moon and Earth can also make shadows in space. These shadows create amazing events called eclipses. During an eclipse, it's like the sun or the moon is taking a quick nap behind the shadows, and things get interesting to watch!

What is an Eclipse?

An eclipse is like a special hide-and-seek game in space. When the moon and Earth line up straight with the sun, they make shadows on each other. It's kind of like when you stand in front of a flashlight and make a shadow on the wall. Depending on who's in front of the sun, either the moon or the Earth can look partly or fully invisible for a little while. That's how an eclipse happens!

Lunar Eclipse

  • When the Earth gets between the sun and the moon, it makes a shadow that blocks sunlight from reaching the moon.
  • This is called a lunar eclipse or eclipse of the moon.
  • If the whole moon gets covered by the Earth's shadow, it's called a total lunar eclipse.

Solar Eclipse 

  • A solar eclipse happens when the moon gets between the sun and the Earth.
  • The moon blocks the sun's light from reaching the Earth, creating a shadow on it.
  • This happens during the new moon phase.
  • We can see up to 5 solar eclipses each year.
  • During a solar eclipse, it's a new moon day.
