Adjectives

Adjectives are the words that are used to describe nouns and pronouns.
Examples:

  • Look at the cute puppy.
  • Once there was a king. 

The king was very brave. In the above sentence, ‘cute’ and ‘brave’ are adjectives as they are used to describe the nouns ‘puppy’ and ‘king’ respectively.

Adjectives are used to indicate size, shape, colour, origin, etc.
For Example:

  • A huge animal (Size)

Degree of Adjectives

  • Positive: It is used to describe the quality of a noun or pronoun. E.g. intelligent, pretty, clever, etc.
  • Comparative: It is used to compare two nouns or pronouns. E.g. more intelligent, prettier, cleverer, etc.
  • Superlative: It is used to show a noun superior out of all. E.g. most intelligent, prettiest, cleverest, etc. 

Types of Adjectives

  • Adjective of quality: Adjectives of Quality or Descriptive Adjectives show the kind of quality of a person or thing. Examples: Beautiful, large, small etc.
  • Proper adjective: Adjectives formed from proper nouns are called Proper Adjectives. Examples: British, Chinese etc.
  • Adjective of number: Adjectives of number or Numeral Adjectives show how many persons or things are meant. This adjective represents numeral value. Examples: Eight, few, second, some etc.
  • Demonstrative adjective: Demonstrative adjectives are mainly used to describe the position of a subject (a noun or pronoun) in space or time. This, that, these and those are the demonstrative adjectives in English.
  • Distributive adjective: Distributive adjectives are used to refer to members of a group individually. Examples: Each, every, either, and neither.
  • Interrogative adjective: An adjective that is used to modify a noun or a pronoun by asking a question is called an interrogative adjective. There are only a few adjectives that can be termed as interrogative adjectives. They are whose, what and which.
  • Adjective of quantity: Adjectives of quantity show how much quantity of a thing is meant. Examples: Some, little, whole, one fourth etc.
  • Possessive adjective: These adjectives, like possessive pronouns, are used to show or represent possession of a quality. Examples: my, your, his, her, their, its, whose, etc.
