  • From early times these kinds of jobs are being done by the people of certain communities and they are not allowed to do any other kind of jobs.

Remembering Those Days

  • In early times the toilets used to be holes under which baskets were kept.
  • In Gandhi Ji’s Sabarmati Ashram, everyone had to clean their own toilet. Everyone was responsible for carrying the basket to the compost pit and emptying it there. No one, not even the guests, was excused from this task.
  • Gandhiji believed everyone should do all kinds of work and cleaning the toilets is not a shameful job.
  • The people who do the cleaning jobs are considered untouchables in society.
  • Gandhi along with his pupils from his ashram used to visit villages to clean the toilets.
  • Gandhi believed that to learn something is like learning a lesson and no job is big or small, even the job of cleaning toilets.
