What Is an Informative Speech?

An informative speech is a type of speech wherein facts are presented to a given audience.

Example 1: Short Speech on Smoking

Smoking is regarded as a fashion symbol in young boys. Despite the ill effects of smoking, people still continue to smoke. Many young boys, who start smoking, feel that they look broadminded and liberated if they smoke.
Most often, the teenagers adopt this habit just because of the company they enjoy. Sometimes, they take a puff from their friend’s cigar. Later on, they develop the habit of smoking as an indispensible part of their lives. With the passage of time, the followers of this bad habit turn into chain smokers. It must be kept in mind that smoking is a toxic habit that may develop lungs’ cancer. Moreover, the other toxic chemicals like arsenic, carbon Monoxide, methane, acetic acid, nicotine, butane and cadmium present in cigarettes are also highly damaging for health.
Currently, cigarette manufacturing companies are doing very well all over the globe. Such manufacturing companies also inscribe warnings on the packets of cigarettes; still people do not pay any heed. On the other hand, every year government increases the price of cigarettes to discourage people using tobacco. Yet smokers go on smoking and prove to be slaves of this bad habit.
The active smokers also harm other people around them known as passive smokers. Here, it is significant on the part of the government to keep a ban on advertisements that allure people to smoke. Moreover, the family members and close friends of the smoker should also play their part to aware the smoker about the bad effects of this habit. Although it requires strong will to stop smoking but once you plan to give up, you can definitely do.

Example 3: Speech on coffee

I drink a lot of coffee, so I was wondering how that might affect my health. This inspired me to do some research on the subject, which made it the perfect topic on which to base my sample speech. It's something in which I have an interest and something I have researched thoroughly (and therefore know something about!).
Today, I'd like to give you some of the facts about caffeine and its effects on your body. I may not cause you to change your coffee consumption, but at least you'll be better informed about what you are putting into your body.
I'm going to talk about the beneficial effects of caffeine, the negative effects and discuss what are considered to be 'safe' levels of caffeine consumption.
Let's start with the good news. Caffeine, which comes from the leaves, seeds and fruits of about 63 different plants, is well known as a stimulant. That's why people drink it, right?
Caffeine does help you wake up and feel more alert and it has been shown to increase attention spans. This is a beneficial effect for people who are driving long distances and for people who are doing tedious work. Calling this a health benefit may be stretching it, though staying awake while you are driving a car definitely contributes to your well-being!
Caffeine also contains antioxidants, which have been shown to have cancer prevention qualities.
The negative effects of caffeine are largely dependent on how much you consume.
When consumed in small quantities - for example, when you have one cup of coffee or one soda - caffeine can increase your heart rate, cause you to urinate more (which can cause dehydration) and prompt your digestive system to produce more acid.
In larger amounts, caffeine can cause you to have headaches, feel restless and nervous, be unable to sleep, and even - in very large quantities - to have hallucinations. (Don't try that at home!)
When larger amounts of caffeine (over 600 mg per day) are ingested over long periods of time, they can cause sleep problems, depression and digestion issues.
According to a Medline article on the National Institutes of Health website, having caffeine in your diet is not of any benefit to your health, but by the same token moderate consumption is not considered harmful.
They say that having up to 3 eight ounce cups of coffee a day - or 250 mg of caffeine - is considered (quote) "average or moderate". 10 cups of coffee a day is considered excessive. Also, remember that the amount of caffeine per cup can vary greatly depending on the type of beans that are used and the strength of the brew.
Most sodas with caffeine, unless they are specially enhanced, have about 35 mg of caffeine per 8 ounces. This means that you don't have to worry TOO much unless you are drinking several 2 liter bottles per day. Also, the effect of caffeine on you personally will depend on a number of factors, such as your weight, general health, mood and personal sensitivity to caffeine.
As you can see, caffeine can have both positive and negative effects on our health and well-being. Nevertheless, the bottom line is that if you drink your coffee or sodas in moderation, you don't have to worry too much.
So, the next time you are wondering whether or not you should have that second cup of coffee to perk you up, relax. At least now you know what it will - and won't - do for you!

Example 4:

Less than a year is left to enjoy the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. Sustainability has become a credo of the Olympic movement since the 1990s. The forthcoming event is not an exception. The “Green games” concept is what I would like to clear up, welcoming the idea of the Olympic competition built to high environmental standards. This concept implies the existence of a green sports fan, capable of enjoying the drama of competition without damaging nature.
The 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games would gather together lots of fans from all over the world who in their enthusiasm are not too friendly to the environment. Yet, when the event is over, the place should look as it was before this invasion of sports fans. How do we all care for the host place and how is the nature of Vancouver is integrated into the event so much expected? I have consulted the available websites to inform you about all preparations, hopes and potential problems. First, I’ll dwell upon the green policies promoted by the International Olympic Committee. Second, I’ll inform you how sustainability will be implemented at Olympic stadiums.
Sustainability can be promoted through sports. The 8th World Conference on Sport and Environment, held ten days ago in Vancouver, emphasized innovation and inspiration in the global Olympic movement. Highly representative, this conference held that the National Olympic Committees play an important role in the sports’ involvement in sustainable development. By this, sports and environmental protection get united as powerful aspects of global sustainable interventions.

Vancouver is preparing for the games, building new stadiums, hotels, improving the infrastructure system, and arranging cultural programs. Technological advances will be felt everywhere for the pleasure of both athletes and sports fans. Each sports event wants to be serviced in the best possible way. Canadians love winter sports. I am sure Vancouver will be full of pleasant surprises.

Athletes are important role models who inspire youth involvement in sports and encourage action. The idea of “green games” gives a new turn to the Olympic movement. It promotes global consciousness of sustainable development which becomes one of the leading policies of Olympic Games. The Olympic movement is not only fascinating and spectacular competition. Olympic Games unite all people, irrespective of nationality, ethnicity, race, and social status. It brings about a strong, positive feeling of pride for the country and for the whole world, as well as gives us all hope that peace will dominate globally. Olympic Games is always a holiday, a celebration of being one humankind, young, and competitive. I hope Vancouver will make known the new names of bright sportsmen known and adored around the world. Olympic Games can make wonders, presenting different countries to sports fans worldwide.

Example 5: Speech about Love

Ladies and gentlemen,
Hi everyone!
Here we are gathered in this forum to discuss ‘Love’. Yes, ‘love’.
This reminds me, once a friend and admirer of my blogs. She was surprised how I would build a speech on the topic “love”.
So, my friends! Here I am and I wish that friend of mine would be here among you listening to me.
Now I come to the main point, yes, ‘love’!
I am afraid that now “Love” is supposed to be the attraction between two opposite sex. I hope you would agree with me. Go and surf the net you will find tons of material on this topic. Your toil will not be of much beneficial if you try to find “Love” in other relations.
Ladies and gentlemen, “LOVE” is the most talk about term since the time memorial – since the creation of mankind (Adam). It existed since then; rather I must say even before, when there was nothing but the Creator; even the creation of the universe is because of LOVE – love of the creator for the creation.
In the modern age there is also lot of talking about love, but I am afraid that now love is mostly supposed to result in sex and not beyond, whereas there are millions of couples who may not love each other, still they are married and increasing population.
Hmm, I am seeing smiles on some faces, maybe there is sarcasm in some eyes too. But what I am talking about is the bright fact, and every day’s experience.
My friends, thinking of love with such a low value is not justified. If I am asked to define love, I would say “Sacrifice, Selflessness, not demanding, to submit to the will of beloved.” This is the aspect which fulfills the instinct of mankind as regard to physical as well as spiritual. A mother is the most sacrificing person for her children. It may be said that it is in her instinct to love her children. Let’s take ‘true friendship’, there is no compulsion, but sometimes friends do sacrifice for each other. There are people who love their fellow being without any blood relationship. God creates the blood relations, but to us the relations we make are important. This is the aspect of love. It prolongs only when it is based on selflessness otherwise parting is there – “Someone loved would leave you behind without love.”
Thank you for being patient to listen to me, bye.
