Q3. Answer the following questions.
(i).

The narrator had friends who were fond of practical jokes, and he was proud of them. He says that he does not care to know people who are not fond of practical jokes.

(ii).

Upon his arrival at the chateau, the narrator received a princely reception from his friends. They fired off rifles, embraced him, and made much of him as if they expected to have great fun at his expense.

(iii).

The narrator was watchful throughout the evening he spent with his friends. He did not let a word, meaning, or gesture escape him, and he even looked distrustfully at the faces of the servants. He was restless and watchful because he smelled a practical joke in the air.

(iv).

The narrator finally decided to go to bed despite his suspicions because he thought that if his friends were spying on him, as he supposed, then they must be waiting for the success of the joke they had been preparing for him. And in the meantime, they must have been laughing enormously at his terror.

(v).

The narrator made his bed in the middle of the room, facing the entrance, at some distance from the suspected bedstead and the corner that had filled him with anxiety.

(vi).

The narrator compares the noise of the heavy body falling on him and the breakfast falling noisily on him to a sideboard laden with plates and dishes that had fallen down, almost deafening him.

Q4. Answer these questions with reference to the context.
And I did not want to be caught. Ah! Certainly not! Certainly not!

(i).

The narrator did not want to be caught by his friends who he suspected of planning a practical joke on him.

(ii).

The narrator found the bed to be dangerous as he feared that he might receive a cold shower from overhead or the moment he stretched himself out, he would find himself sinking to the floor with his mattress.

(iii).

The person concerned examined the entire apartment and found nothing suspicious. To ensure his safety, he lit all the wax candles on the mantelpiece, closed the shutters and drew the curtains, and placed a chair in front of them. He also dragged the bedclothes and the mattress into the middle of the room, away from the suspected bedstead and made his bed there.

(iv).

The person was eventually caught in his bed by his friends who had planned the practical joke. He received a heavy body tumbling right on top of his own, and a burning liquid was poured over his face, neck, and chest.

(v).

It is not possible to hold anyone responsible for the person getting caught as it was a practical joke planned by his friends, and he had suspected it all along but still went ahead with sleeping in the room.

Q5. Think and answer.
Q.

It was the narrator's suspicion and fear that led to his fall. He was so worried about being the victim of a practical joke that he could not relax and enjoy himself, and as a result, he ended up sleeping on the sofa, which was not very comfortable. This made him vulnerable to the prank his friends had planned for him. If he had not been so paranoid, he might have been able to anticipate their joke and turn it around on them.
