The stranger who arrives at the Coach and Horses Inn is a mysterious man wrapped from head to foot in thick clothing and carrying a black travelling bag. The brim of his soft felt hat hides every centimetre of his face, except for his eyes, which are covered by smoked glasses. He appears late on a stormy night in February, carrying snow piled on his shoulders. Mrs Hall, the innkeeper's wife, thinks she has never seen such a strange-looking man. But as travellers are few and far between at this time of year, she is not in the mood to question her guest's appearance.
