How To Start JEE Preparation In Class 9th - Class 10 PDF Download

JEE Main and JEE Advanced are two of the most prestigious exams in India, and due to their vast syllabus and high difficulty level, clearing them is not easy. It requires consistent hard work for a minimum of two years. The fundamental concepts of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM), which students will study in classes 11 and 12, are rooted in the syllabus of classes 9 and 10. The syllabus of class 9 Physics and Chemistry is similar to that of class 11, while class 10 is similar to class 12. Although students are generally told that class 11th syllabus is too difficult for a class 9th student to understand, that is not necessarily the case. In class 9, you already learn about Newton’s laws, Trigonometry, and the Periodic table. So, if you cover even a small fraction of the syllabus in your early days, it won’t hurt.

Why start early in class 9

  • When you begin your actual preparation for JEE from Class 11, you will have an advantage over your peers. While many of them may struggle with grasping the initial concepts, you will find it easier and be able to progress to more challenging problems.
  • Take note that you have a span of 4 years before the JEE exams. If you utilize this time effectively, it can have a significant impact on your performance.
  • I'm not suggesting that you should completely forgo having fun and only focus on studying. It's important to have fun and play every day, but try to allocate some time for JEE preparation as well. You will notice the difference later on.
  • Additionally, investing effort in JEE preparation will also benefit you in other exams such as Olympiads and NTSE.

How to start preparing?

  • The school syllabus is generally manageable, as you only need to focus on half of it each semester. After completing your schoolwork and engaging in extracurricular activities, you may have some spare time. You can utilize this time effectively, but it's important to establish a strong foundation first. If you're finding PCM (Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics) in classes 9 and 10 challenging, it's advisable to dedicate more time to gain confidence in those subjects before tackling more difficult concepts. It's crucial to have a clear understanding of everything taught in school, as excelling in school exams is not a daunting task.
  • Ensure that you grasp the fundamental topics in these subjects. A thorough understanding of each and every topic in classes 9 and 10 will help you solve problems for JEE in classes 11 and 12. Address any doubts you may have and seek assistance from teachers if needed. Remember to consolidate your understanding of each topic.
  • Time management plays a pivotal role in achieving a high score in any exam. Scoring well in JEE exams requires accurate problem-solving within a specific time frame. This can be accomplished by practicing and solving a variety of problems within given time constraints. Identify your strengths and weaknesses while studying these subjects, take note of them, and work on clearing any doubts. The objective is to identify the topics that appear challenging and focus on improving your understanding. You have ample time to do so.
  • Cultivate friendships with peers who share the same goals. Having a supportive study circle can be invaluable. They can assist you when you encounter difficulties. Explaining concepts to your friends is an effective way to solidify your understanding and retain knowledge for an extended period.
  • Once you have a firm grasp of the fundamental concepts, you can delve into more complex concepts and problems within these subjects. A strong foundation in the subjects is crucial for effectively solving problems in this exam.
  • Participating in various exams such as NTSE, NSO, IMO, and others during your school years can alleviate exam anxiety. However, it's important to approach these exams with sincerity in order to make progress. Participating in these exams exposes you to competition from students across the country, expanding your horizons beyond your immediate class. Many students struggle with "exam phobia," which hampers their performance despite understanding the concepts. Attempting different exams helps alleviate this fear and provides opportunities for improvement.

There are several topics in classes 9 and 10 that are also part of the JEE syllabus. It would be beneficial to learn these chapters in advance, focusing on the following areas:

  • Physics: Properties of Solids and Liquids (Matter – Its Nature and Behavior), Atoms and Nuclei, Motion, Work, Energy and Power, Force and Newton’s Laws, Sound, Gravitation, Electric Current, and Magnetic Effects of Current, Optics.
  • Chemistry: Matter and its Nature, States of Matter, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, Atomic Structure, and Environmental Chemistry (Note: Environmental Chemistry mostly involves rote learning and can be skipped for now).
  • Mathematics: Quadratic Equations, Probability (only basic questions for now), Co-ordinate Geometry, and Trigonometry.

It's important to note that you don't have to learn all of these topics. Focus on what is possible and manageable for you without getting distracted from your current coursework.
Many students often find the transition from classes 9 and 10 to class 11 challenging. They feel that the syllabus becomes more difficult and struggle to cope with it. There is indeed a significant difference in the level of studies between classes 10 and 11. Students may find it challenging to adapt to the syllabus in 11th and 12th grade due to the comparatively easier and spoon-fed approach they experienced in earlier classes.
