National Water Awards

Why in News?
The Vice President of India will confer upon the fourth National Water Awards in New Delhi on 17th June 2023.

National Water Awards


Nodal: The Ministry of Jal Shakti is responsible for overseeing the National Water Awards.

  • The National Water Awards were initiated in 2018 by the Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation.
  • These awards provide a platform for start-ups and established organizations to engage with policymakers and discuss the adoption of effective water resources management practices in India.

Purpose and Recognition

  • The awards aim to acknowledge and encourage outstanding efforts and achievements in realizing the vision of a ‘Jal Samriddh Bharat’ (Prosperous India through Water).
  • They recognize the contributions made by states, districts, individuals, organizations, and other entities across the country.

Categories

  • The awards cover various categories, including ‘Best State,’ ‘Best District,’ ‘Best Village Panchayat,’ ‘Best Urban Local Body,’ and more.

Awards and Prizes

  • Winners in each category receive a citation, trophy, and cash prize.
  • The cash prizes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rank winners are Rs. 2 lakhs, Rs. 1.5 lakhs, and Rs. 1 lakh, respectively.

GoI-UNSDC Framework

Why in News?
Recently, NITI Aayog and the United Nations in India signed the Government of India – United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2023-2027.

GoI-UNSDC Framework

  • The GoI-UNSDC (Government of India-United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation) framework is a collaborative initiative between the UN development system and the Government of India.
  • It aligns with India’s national vision for development and aims to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by promoting gender equality, youth empowerment, and human rights.

Strategic Pillars: The framework is built on four strategic pillars that are derived from the 2030 Agenda

  • People: Focusing on the well-being and empowerment of individuals and communities.
  • Prosperity: Promoting economic growth, decent work, and sustainable livelihoods.
  • Planet: Addressing environmental challenges, climate change, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH).
  • Participation: Empowering people, communities, and institutions to actively participate in decision-making processes.

Outcome Areas
Within these strategic pillars, the framework identifies six outcome areas:

  • Health and Well Being: Ensuring access to quality healthcare and promoting well-being.
  • Nutrition and Food Security: Enhancing food security and promoting good nutrition.
  • Quality Education: Improving access to quality education and lifelong learning opportunities.
  • Economic Growth and Decent Work: Fostering inclusive economic growth and promoting decent work for all.
  • Environment, Climate, WASH, and Resilience: Addressing environmental sustainability, climate change, and resilience.
  • Empowering People, Communities, and Institutions: Strengthening institutions and promoting the empowerment of individuals and communities.

Implementation and Monitoring

  • The GoI-UNSDC framework will be jointly led by the Government of India and the United Nations, India through a Joint Steering Committee.
  • It will focus on SDG localization, which involves adapting global goals to local contexts, and South-South cooperation, building on India’s leadership and commitment to SDG implementation and cooperation among developing countries.
