AIIMS Delhi collaborates with WHO and Duke-NUS for Patient Safety and Quality Control

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi (AIIMS) has joined hands with the World Health Organization (WHO-SEARO) in a collaborative effort to ensure patient safety and quality control. WHO identifies patient harm as a significant challenge in global public health, leading to avoidable mortality and morbidity. In line with this, AIIMS is establishing a core committee for Patient Safety and Quality to implement advanced initiatives across various departments.
AIIMS will adopt the learning curriculum proposed by WHO, in association with the Duke-NUS Institute of Patient Safety & Quality (IPSQ). With a daily footfall of over 25,000 patients seeking treatment for various medical conditions, AIIMS aims to benefit from this new initiative. WHO will facilitate onsite visits of experts and study tours for AIIMS staff as and when required.

Prraneeth Vuppala becomes India's 82nd Grandmaster

Prraneeth Vuppala, a 15-year-old chess player from Telangana, has achieved the prestigious title of Grandmaster, becoming India's 82nd Grandmaster. Prraneeth accomplished this feat by attaining the required 2,500 FIDE rating points during the Baku Open tournament. He secured the necessary points by defeating GM Hans Niemann from the USA in the penultimate round of the tournament.
Prraneeth's achievement makes him the sixth Grandmaster from Telangana and adds to India's rich chess legacy. India has produced a total of 81 grandmasters, placing it third in the world after Russia and China. The first Indian grandmaster was Viswanathan Anand, a five-time world champion widely regarded as one of the greatest chess players of all time.

Praveen Sood appointed as CBI Director

Praveen Sood, the Director General of Police for Karnataka, has been appointed as the new Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a tenure of two years. The appointment was finalized by a high-level committee comprising the Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India, and the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha.
Praveen Sood, a 1986-batch IPS officer from the Karnataka cadre, will assume the role after the completion of the current director's tenure. The selection process involved shortlisting three senior IPS officers for the position. The CBI Director is chosen by a committee consisting of the Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India, and the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, serving a fixed tenure of two years, extendable up to five years.

The week-long campaign, organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN regional commissions, brings together governments, NGOs, businesses, and individuals to advocate for road safety. The theme for this year's UN Global Road Safety Week is sustainable transport, emphasizing the need to promote walking, cycling, and the use of public transport to reduce road accidents.

3rd Energy Transitions Working Group Meeting Under India's G20 Presidency

The 3rd Energy Transitions Working Group Meeting (ETWG) is scheduled to take place in Mumbai, under India's G20 Presidency. More than 100 delegates representing G20 member countries, special invitee countries, and international organizations like the International Energy Agency (IEA), World Bank, and World Energy Council India will participate in the three-day meeting.
The meeting will focus on priority areas outlined during India's Presidency, including energy transition, low-cost financing, energy security, energy efficiency, responsible consumption, clean energy access, and more. Distinguished organizations such as the International Energy Agency, World Energy Council India, and the National Power Training Institute will share their expertise in the morning session.

Arinze Ifeakandu wins the Swansea University Dylan Thomas Prize 2023

Nigerian writer Arinze Ifeakandu has been honored with the Swansea University Dylan Thomas Prize 2023, one of the world's most significant literary prizes for young writers. Ifeakandu received the award for his debut work, "God's Children Are Little Broken Things," a captivating collection of short fiction that explores themes of loneliness, love, and the experiences of being gay in contemporary Nigeria.
The Swansea University Dylan Thomas Prize, launched in 2006, aims to celebrate and support exceptional literary talent. The prize is awarded to the best published work in the English language by an author aged 39 or under. Ifeakandu's accomplishment places him above other notable shortlisted writers, solidifying his place in the literary world.

Jayant Narlikar receives the Govind Swarup Lifetime Achievement Award

Prof. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar, a renowned astronomer, has been honored with the first Astronomical Society of India Govind Swarup Lifetime Achievement Award. The award, announced earlier this year at the 41st meeting of the Astronomical Society of India, was presented to Prof. Narlikar by the ASI President, Prof. Dipankar Banerjee. Prof. Narlikar, the founding director of IUCAA (Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics), Pune, has made significant contributions to cosmology research in India.
