INS Kavaratti, an indigenously designed and built ASW Corvette of the Indian Navy, has arrived at Batam, Indonesia to participate in the 4th edition of the India-Indonesia Bilateral exercise Samudra Shakti-23. The exercise will take place from 14th to 19th May 2023. Along with INS Kavaratti, an Indian Navy Dornier Maritime Patrol aircraft and Chetak helicopter will also be participating. The Indonesian Navy will be represented by KRI Sultan Iskandar Muda, CN 235 Maritime Patrol Aircraft, and AS565 Panther Helicopter.
The primary objective of Exercise Samudra Shakti is to enhance interoperability, jointness, and mutual cooperation between the Indian and Indonesian navies. The exercise will consist of a Harbour phase and a Sea phase. The Harbour phase will involve cross deck visits, professional interactions, subject matter expert exchanges, and sports fixtures.
During the Sea phase, activities such as weapon firing, helicopter operations, anti-submarine warfare, air defence exercises, and boarding operations are planned. The exercise will demonstrate the high level of interoperability between the two navies and their shared commitment towards peace and stability in the region.
Using its frontline guided missile destroyer INS Mormugao, the Indian Navy successfully test fired a BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. The missile firing was highly accurate, hitting the target with precision. The INS Mormugao destroyer has been praised for its successful maiden BrahMos missile firing.
BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd, an India-Russian joint venture, is responsible for producing supersonic cruise missiles that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land platforms. The BrahMos missiles, known for their speed, fly at a velocity of 2.8 Mach, which is almost three times the speed of sound. India also exports the BrahMos missiles to other countries.
According to a report released by the aviation analytical firm Cirium, GMR Hyderabad International Airport has achieved an impressive On-Time Performance (OTP) of 90.43% for the month of March 2023. This record makes it the only airport in the world to surpass the 90% mark in terms of punctuality. In November 2022, the airport was ranked 4th in the 'Large Airports' category with an OTP of 88.44%.
The selection criteria for the airport's performance is based on the actual gate departure service, which must have an 80% or better coverage of the actual departure time and serve at least three regions, including its own. Indian shooters Hriday Hazarika and Nancy Mandhotra have achieved remarkable success at the ongoing ISSF World Cup 2023 held in Baku, Azerbaijan. Hriday Hazarika won a silver medal in the men's 10-meter air rifle event, while Nancy Mandhotra secured a silver medal in the women's 10-meter air rifle event. This is the first-ever ISSF World Cup medal for both Hazarika and Mandhotra.
The Baku meet is the penultimate stage of the ISSF World Cup for rifle and pistol shooters. The final stage will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, before the ISSF World Championships in November at Doha. India has sent a 34-member team to the ISSF World Cup Baku 2023.
In another notable achievement, Indian pair Divya TS and Sarabjot Singh clinched the gold medal in the 10-meter air pistol mixed team event. They defeated the Serbian legends Damir Mikec and Zorana Arunovic in a thrilling final match, securing a nerve-wracking 16-14 victory. Eminent singer Kalyani Kazi, the youngest daughter-in-law of poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, has passed away at the age of 87. She was admitted to SSKM hospital from a nursing home in south Kolkata and succumbed to multi-organ failure. Kalyani Kazi had been battling leukemia and had renal problems.
