1. What is the mechanism of breathing?
Ans. The mechanism of breathing involves the contraction and relaxation of muscles to create changes in the volume of the thoracic cavity. During inhalation, the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles contract, expanding the thoracic cavity and causing air to rush into the lungs. During exhalation, the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles relax, allowing the thoracic cavity to decrease in volume and push air out of the lungs.
2. How does the exchange and transport of gases occur in the body?
Ans. The exchange of gases occurs in the alveoli of the lungs. Oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses across the thin walls of the alveoli into the surrounding capillaries, where it binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells. At the same time, carbon dioxide, a waste product, diffuses out of the capillaries into the alveoli to be exhaled. The transport of gases in the body is facilitated by the circulatory system, with oxygen-rich blood being pumped to body tissues and carbon dioxide-rich blood being carried back to the lungs for exhalation.
3. What are the main components of the human respiratory system?
Ans. The main components of the human respiratory system include the nose, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs. The nose and nasal cavity filter, warm, and moisten inhaled air. The pharynx connects the nasal cavity to the larynx. The larynx contains the vocal cords and serves as the passageway for air to enter the trachea. The trachea, or windpipe, branches into two bronchi, which further divide into smaller bronchioles. The bronchioles lead to tiny air sacs called alveoli, where gas exchange occurs. The lungs contain these alveoli and are responsible for oxygenating the blood and removing carbon dioxide.
4. How is respiration regulated in the body?
Ans. Respiration is regulated by the respiratory control centers in the brain, primarily the medulla oblongata and the pons. These control centers monitor the levels of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the blood and adjust the rate and depth of breathing accordingly. When carbon dioxide levels increase or oxygen levels decrease, signals are sent to the diaphragm and intercostal muscles to increase the rate and depth of breathing. Conversely, when carbon dioxide levels decrease or oxygen levels increase, signals are sent to decrease breathing.
5. What are some common respiratory disorders?
Ans. Common respiratory disorders include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, bronchitis, and emphysema. Asthma is characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to difficulty breathing. COPD is a progressive lung disease that causes airflow obstruction and difficulty exhaling. Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that can cause inflammation and fluid accumulation. Bronchitis is the inflammation of the bronchial tubes, leading to coughing and mucus production. Emphysema is a type of COPD that involves damage to the alveoli, leading to reduced lung function.
