Counting in 10s

  • Hey kids! Are you ready for a fun game today?
  • It's time to put on our counting hats and get ready to explore!
  • Count the number of colourful pencils given below.

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

  • Well done, here are 10 pencils.
  • Now let us group them together. But wait. Kids, do you know what is the meaning of grouping things together? Let us understand.

Grouping means putting things together in sets or batches.

  • This is a group of 10 pencils together.

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

  • Now, can you count the number of groups or bundles of pencils given below?

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

  • When you count them out loud, instead of saying each number one by one, you can count by tens. It goes like this:
  • First, you count each group as one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths
  • You can count these groups as: ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy, eighty, ninety, hundred.
So, instead of saying one, two, three... you say ten, twenty, thirty... until you reach 100.
A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths
  • We can represent 100 as 10 groups of Tens.
A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths
  • So, whether you count by ones or by tens, the total number of objects is the same.
  • Counting by tens helps you count faster and understand how numbers work together in groups.

Let us try:

Moving on to a different game now, we have balloons with us. Can you count the number of balloons in 1 bundle?

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

There are 10 balloons.

If there are 10 balloons in 1 bundle, then how many balloons are there in 4 bundles?

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

1 bundle = 10 balloons

4 bundles = 10 + 10 + 10 + 10

So, 4 bundles = 40 balloons

Division into Groups

  • We will now play a tough game. Are you ready students?
  • Mr Sharma has to arrange eggs into trays to sell them.
  •  6 eggs can be arranged into one tray
  • Mr Sharma has 18 eggs with himself and needs our help to arrange them into trays.
  • How many trays will he need for this?

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

Here we have 18 eggs.

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

Let us arrange 6 trays into one tray. Now, how many eggs are we left with?
18-6= 12
A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes MathsLet us arrange the remaining 12 eggs.6 goes into the second tray. Now how many eggs are we left with?
12-6=6 eggs.
Now we will arrange these leftover 6 eggs into the third tray.

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

Students, can you count the number of trays that Mr Sharma requires to arrange 18 eggs?
1, 2, 3.
3 trays.
Mr Sharma needs 3 trays to arrange 18 eggs.
Well done!

Let us Try:

Now students, by now you have understood a lot of fun concepts. It is your chance to put them to use.

Count Upto 100

How many units of blocks are there in this block stick?

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths10 blocks.
Can you tell how many blocks are these?

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

We can easily count this by first counting the number of block strips. 3 block strips.
1 block strip has 10 blocks. So, 10+10+10= 30
Now, we will count the individual blocks.
4 blocks.

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes MathsSo, 30 + 4 = 34.

In a hundred grid, you have ten rows and ten columns, making a total of 100 units or squares. Each square represents one unit.
Now, when we talk about "combinations of ten strips," we're essentially talking about different ways to arrange these 100 units while focusing on the idea of grouping by tens.

Counting Through Cards

Let us learn how to count big numbers easily.
Now, let us suppose that the triangle represents ten and the circle represents one.
A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

Now, let us try answering the following question based on this.
A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

There are 2 Tens and 4 Ones.
So we will write 2 below tens and 4 below ones.
A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes MathsThis means we have 10+10= 20 and 4
Total is 24

Regrouping

To understand regrouping math, one has to understand place value.
A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

Regrouping can be defined as the process of making groups of tens when carrying out operations like addition and subtraction with two-digit numbers or larger. To regroup means to rearrange groups in place value to carry out an operation.

We can turn any group of ten ones into a ten.

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

Take a look at this group of ones.A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

We can see that in the above image, we change 15 ones to 1 ten and 5 ones.
Now, what about this group?

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

We can regroup this into 4 tens and 9 ones.
Now students, take a look at this table and understand the regrouping concept in detail.

Greater Than Less Than

  • Greater than and less than symbols are like signs that help us compare numbers.
  • They show us which number is bigger or smaller.
A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths
  • If a number is bigger than another, we use the greater than symbol (>), and if it's smaller, we use the less than symbol (<).
  • So, these symbols help us understand which number is larger or smaller.

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

Kids, do you know if your mother's age is greater than your dad's age or if your dad's age is more.
A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes MathsLet us help little Susie to answer this question. Her mother's age is 24 and her dad is 31 years old.
A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths
Which is greater: 24 or 31?

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

We can see that in 24 there are 2 tens, and in 31 there are 3 tens.

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes MathsHence, 31 is greater than 24. So, Susie's father's age is greater than her mom's age.

Positions

  • Imagine a boat race. The first boat in the race is at the front, leading the pack.
  • It's in the first position.
  • The boat right behind it is in the second position.
  • And the boat at the very end of the race is in the last position.

A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths

  • So, in a boat race, first means at the front, second means right after that, and last means at the end. Just like standing in line, but with boats!

Numbers Everywhere

  • Did you know that numbers are all around us, quietly playing their part in our everyday lives? It's true. Take a look around, and you'll find them in places you might not have noticed before, like house numbers and parking lots.
A Day at the Beach Class 2 Notes Maths
  • Think about the last time you walked down your street. Have you ever paid attention to the numbers on the houses? Each number serves as an address, identifying which house is which. And interestingly, these numbers are formed using just ten digits, from 0 to 9.
  • Similarly, when you visit a parking lot, you'll see numbers painted on the parking spaces. These numbers help drivers remember where they parked their cars. Again, these numbers are composed of the same digits, 0 to 9.

Well done students!
Hope you had fun playing these fun games. Remember, that counting can be so much fun. Hope you understood all these concepts and will practice them even more.
