Summary

In this story, the narrator's mother talks about her childhood in a place called Shillong with a lot of love. She remembers walking to school with her younger brother and having exciting adventures along the way.

One day, when it was cold and rainy, the narrator's mother forgot to bring her lunch to school. This made her feel worried and nervous. She told her brother about the mistake, and he started crying, which made her even more embarrassed. However, a kind lady named Mother Superior at the convent (a special school) noticed their problem. Instead of scolding them, she invited them in and gave them a special lunch with fresh bread, butter, fruits, and milk.

This lunch became very special to the narrator's mother not just because of the tasty food but because it was a break from her grandma's everyday plum jam on bread. She didn't like plums much as a child because they were always a part of her daily meals. Her grandma had a big plum tree next to their house that gave lots of red plums every summer. The grandma would use these plums to make delicious plum jam that lasted for a long time.

Even though the narrator never saw that plum tree because her family moved to Delhi, she often thought about it. She would buy plums from the market during summers, even though they were a bit expensive, just to enjoy the taste and remind herself of those childhood memories.
