Major Wetlands

Wetlands encompass diverse marshy landscapes, including mangroves, lakes, floodplains, marshes, and flooded forests, supporting a rich array of both aquatic and terrestrial life. These areas gain recognition through the National Wetland Conservation Programme, with international importance identified by the organization 'Ramsar.'
In West Bengal, six wetlands have been acknowledged by the National Wetland Conservation Programme, with one of them designated as a Ramsar site. These wetlands are as follows:

  1. Ahiran Jhil Wetland: Situated in the Murshidabad district, this area receives excess water from the Bhagirathi river, forming a marshy wetland. It was officially designated as a wetland in 2004.
  2. East Kolkata Wetland: Located in Kolkata and spanning an area of 125 sq km, this wetland holds international significance and was included as a Ramsar site in 2002.
  3. Rasikbeel Wetland: Found in the Cooch Behar district near Tufanganj, this wetland was recognized in 2004 and serves as a habitat for various bird species.
  4. Satragachi Wetland: Situated in Howrah and identified as a wetland in 2005, this lake originated from surplus water from the Hooghly river, becoming a renowned spot for migratory birds during winters.
  5. Sundarbans Wetland: Located in South 24 Parganas, this wetland gained recognition in 2003. It formed due to the low land bank of the Matla river and extensive silt deposition, resulting in a unique mix of salty and fresh water.
  6. Patlakhawa Rasomati Wetland: Positioned in the Cooch Behar district and acknowledged as a wetland site in 2008, this wetland is situated along the Torsa river.
