Imagine you have a list of your favourite ice-cream flavours. You might put chocolate at the top because it is your absolute favourite, then vanilla next because you like it a lot but not as much as chocolate, and maybe strawberry after that. That is an easy way to understand ranking.

What is ranking?

Ranking is the when you put things in a specific order according to a rule or a criterion. can be how much you like something, how fast someone ran, how heavy an object is, or any other measurable or comparable property. When we rank, we place items from the best to the least, from the first to the last, or from the largest to the smallest, depending on the rule we choose.

Simple examples of ranking

• In a race, runners are ranked according to who crosses the finish line first, second, third, and so on.
• If you arrange your toys by size, you can put the biggest first and the smallest last.
• At school, marks can be used to rank students from highest to lowest to find who scored the most.

What is a ranking test?

A ranking test is like a fun puzzle where you put people, things, or numbers in the correct order. You get small clues such as “A came before B” or “X is taller than Y.” Using these clues, you figure out who is first, who is last, and who is in between. It is just like lining up toys or friends from start to finish in the right way.

How to solve a ranking test?

• Find who comes before or after someone else.
• Write the clues in a simple way and join them like puzzle pieces.
• Draw a small line and place names or objects as you figure them out.
• Check that all clues still match your line.
• Answer what is asked, like who is first, last, or in the middle.
