Earthquake distribution

Earthquakes occur at various plate boundaries. 

  • The majority of earthquakes happen along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire', which accounts for about 90% of all earthquakes globally.

Volcano distribution

  • Volcanoes are commonly found at divergent (constructive) and convergent (destructive) plate boundaries. Around 75% of active volcanoes are situated along the 'Ring of Fire' encircling the Pacific Ocean.
  • Hotspots are areas where volcanic activity occurs away from plate boundaries. These are columns of magma that rise through the Earth's crust.
