What is IEO?

The International English Olympiad (IEO) is an engaging competition organized by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) for students in grades 1 to 10. Eligibility Criteria for IEO 2023-24

• Schools must register their students for participation in the IEO, as required by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF).
• Schools that have not yet registered can do so by contacting the SOF via email.
• Students in grades 1 through 10 are eligible to participate in the IEO.
• Application forms for the IEO must be submitted through the student's respective school, as individual applications are not accepted by the SOF.
• Mathematics is a compulsory subject for all students wishing to participate in the IEO.
• Only students from recognized boards such as CBSE, ICSE, and state boards are eligible to take part in the examination.

Steps to participate in IEO

Participating in the International English Olympiad (IEO) is a straightforward process for students in classes 1 to 10. Here’s a detailed guide on how to participate:

Step 1: Accessing Registration Forms

• Schools affiliated with the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) receive registration forms for the IEO.
• Schools not affiliated can request prospectuses by emailing info@sofworld.org or calling SOF.

Step 2: Completing and Returning Forms

• After students fill out the registration forms, schools must submit them to SOF by the specified deadline, ensuring all forms are complete and in order.

Step 3: Roll Numbers

• The coordinating teacher at the school needs to fill out the School Registration Form (SRF) and Students' Registration Sheet (SRS) as per SOF's guidelines.
• These forms should be sent to SOF before the indicated deadline.
• Upon receiving the SRS, SOF will register the school and its students, assigning roll numbers to all participants.

Step 4: Registration Fee Details

• Schools in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal pay Rs 125* per student for the IEO exam.
• An additional charge of Rs 25 per student may be added by schools for honourarium and other expenses.
• For schools outside these countries, the fee is US$9 per student, plus an extra US$1 for related costs.

Note: Fees include GST.

Step 5: Fee Exemption

• Students with severe physical disabilities or those whose parents were martyred in defense operations are exempt from fees.

Step 6: No Individual Registrations

• Individual student registrations are not permitted. Students must register through their respective schools to participate in the IEO.

Exam Pattern and Syllabus

Pattern

• The IEO exam is divided into three stages for students.
• Section I tests Word and Structure.
• Section II focuses on Reading.
• Section III emphasizes Spoken and Written Expression.
• Section IV includes Higher Order Thinking Questions.
• The question paper contains 35 objective-type questions for Classes 1 to 4 and 50 questions for Classes 5 to 10.
• Duration: Students have 60 minutes to complete the exam.

• Word & Structure Knowledge (Section - 1): This section covers various topics such as synonyms, antonyms, analogies, spellings, collocations, phrasal verbs, idioms, homonyms, homophones, one-word substitutions, and parts of speech including nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, articles, prepositions, conjunctions, and determiners. It also includes jumbled words, punctuation, tenses, voices, narrations, and question tags. Additionally, words related to leisure, household items/issues, social causes, outdoor locations, and activities are included.
• Reading (Section - 2): This section assesses the ability to find and retrieve information from different text types such as news reports, blurbs, and dictionaries. It also involves understanding information presented in formats like instruction manuals and messages, as well as gaining a general understanding of longer texts and looking for specific details in editorials and essays.
• Spoken & Written Expression (Section 3): This section evaluates the ability to grasp situation-based communication variations such as making requests, giving information, expressing surprise, and pronunciation in spoken and written contexts.
• Achievers Section (Section 4): This section includes higher-order thinking questions that follow the syllabus of Sections 1, 2, and 3.
