What are magnets?

  • Magnets are materials that attract other materials. While all magnets are made of metal, not all metals are magnetic.
  • They serve practical purposes like holding doors closed and lifting heavy objects, but they can also be quite entertaining.

How magnets work?

  • Magnets have two ends called the north pole and the south pole.
  • When two like poles (north-north or south-south) are placed close together, they repel (push apart) each other.
  • When two unlike poles (north-south) are close, they attract (pull together) each other.
  • Magnets can attract and repel without touching; they only need to be near each other.
  • The space around a magnet, known as the magnetic field, contains attracting and repelling forces that are strongest at the poles.
