What are decimal numbers?

  • Definition: Decimal numbers represent values that are not whole integers.
  • Characteristics:
    • Decimal numbers fall between consecutive whole numbers.
    • For instance, 10.4 lies between 10 and 11, being greater than 10 and less than 11.
  • Reading Decimal Numbers:
    • 4.2 is read as "4 and 2 tenths."
    • 4.20 is read as "4 and 2 tenths and 0 hundredths." The trailing zero is optional.
    • 4.02 is read as "4 and 0 tenths and 2 hundredths."
