Mean, median, mode and range | Year 6 Mathematics PDF Download

Median

  • The median is the middle value in a set of numbers.
  • To find the median, you arrange the numbers in order and identify the middle value.
  • For instance, in the set: 3, 3, 6, 13, 100, the median is 6.
  • If there are two middle values, the median is the average of those values.

Mode

  • The mode is the number that appears most frequently in a set of numbers.
  • To find the mode, you arrange the numbers in ascending order and identify the number that occurs most frequently.
  • For example, in the set: 3, 3, 6, 13, 100, the mode is 3.

Question for Mean, median, mode and range
Try yourself:
What is the median of the following set of numbers: 2, 4, 7, 7, 9, 12?
View Solution

Mean

  • The mean is calculated by adding all the numbers together and then dividing by the number of numbers.
  • For example, to find the mean of the numbers 6, 3, 100, 3, and 13:
    • Add the numbers together: 6 + 3 + 100 + 3 + 13 = 125
    • Divide the total by the number of numbers: 125 ÷ 5 = 25
  • The mean is 25.
  • Keep in mind that the mean is not always a whole number.

Range

  • Range: The range of a set of numbers is the difference between the largest and the smallest values in that set.
  • Calculation of Range:
    • Subtract the smallest number from the largest number.
  • Example: Consider a set of numbers: 3, 3, 6, 13, 100.
    • Subtracting the smallest (3) from the largest (100) number: 100 - 3 = 97.
  • Range Value: In this case, the range of the set is 97.

FAQs on Mean, median, mode and range - Year 6 Mathematics

1. What is the importance of understanding mean, median, mode, and range in the context of UK schools?
Ans. Understanding mean, median, mode, and range is crucial in UK schools as these statistical measures help in analyzing and interpreting data, which is essential for various subjects such as mathematics, science, and social studies. They provide valuable insights into the central tendency, distribution, and variability of data.
2. How are mean, median, mode, and range calculated in UK schools?
Ans. The mean is calculated by adding up all the numbers in a data set and then dividing by the total number of values. The median is the middle value when the numbers are arranged in ascending order. The mode is the number that appears most frequently in the data set. The range is calculated by subtracting the smallest value from the largest value in the data set.
3. Can you provide an example of how mean, median, mode, and range are used in UK school exams?
Ans. In a mathematics exam, students may be asked to find the mean, median, mode, and range of a set of numbers or to interpret these measures in the context of a word problem. For example, students may need to calculate the average test score (mean) of a class or determine the most common score (mode) among students.
4. How do mean, median, mode, and range help students in UK schools with data analysis and problem-solving skills?
Ans. By understanding and applying mean, median, mode, and range, students in UK schools develop critical thinking skills and the ability to analyze and interpret data effectively. These statistical measures help students draw conclusions, make comparisons, and solve real-world problems based on numerical information.
5. Are there any online resources or tools available to help UK school students practice and improve their understanding of mean, median, mode, and range?
Ans. Yes, there are various online platforms, educational websites, and interactive tools specifically designed to help students practice and enhance their knowledge of mean, median, mode, and range. These resources offer practice problems, tutorials, and quizzes to support students in mastering these statistical concepts.
