Breeds of Cow found in Rajasthan

In the state of Rajasthan, there are three indigenous cattle breeds which are the Rathi, Tharparker, and Nagori. These breeds are known for their exceptional endurance and are well-adapted to the local environment.

Nagauri

• Origin: Primarily found in the Suhalak area of Nagaur district.
• Color: White to light grey.
• Milk Production: Produces a smaller quantity of milk.
• Type: Draught.
• Uses:
  • Ploughing
  • Cultivation
  • Drawing water from wells
  • Transporting field produce to markets

Tharparkar Breed

• Origin: Initially from Tharparkar district (Pakistan) of undivided India, predominantly found in Jodhpur and Jaisalmer districts.
• Breed Origin: Malani (Barmer).
• Alternate Names: Also known as White Sindhi, Gray Sindhi, and Thari.
• Milk Production: Cows have excellent milk production capabilities.
• Purpose: Reared for both draught and milk production, able to produce milk under strict feeding regimens and challenging environmental conditions.

Rathi Breed

• Distribution: Predominantly found in Loonkaransar Tehsil of Bikaner, and in the Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, and parts of Jaisalmer districts.
• Type: Primarily a milch variety, with cows excelling in milk production.
• Limitation: Males lack draught power.

Kankrej

• Distribution: Found in Rajasthan’s southwestern districts of Barmer, Sirohi, and Jalore.
• Alternate Names: Also known as Wadad, Waged, and Wadhiar.
• Milk Production: Provides an average of 5-10 liters of milk daily.
• Draught Capacity: Bulls of this variety have strong draught capabilities.

Gir Breed

• Origin: Comes from the Gir forests of Saurashtra in Gujarat.
• Distribution in Rajasthan: Found in Southeastern Ajmer, Chittorgarh, Bundi, and Kota.

Malvi Breed of Cow

• Origin: Indigenous to the Malwa region.
• Distribution: Primarily found in parts of Rajasthan, particularly in the districts of Jhalawar and surrounding areas.
• Milk Production: Known for moderate milk yield.
• Draught Capacity: Both males and females are strong and have good draught power, making them suitable for agricultural work.
• Physical Characteristics: Generally medium-sized, with a compact build and strong limbs.

Hariana

• Origin: Indigenous to the Haryana state of India.
• Distribution: Commonly found in Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Rajasthan.
• Milk Production: Known for good milk yield.
• Draught Capacity: Bulls are strong and have excellent draught power, suitable for heavy agricultural work.
• Physical Characteristics: Typically medium to large in size, with a white or light grey coat and a well-developed body structure.

Buffalo Breeds found in Rajasthan

In Rajasthan, there are no native buffalo breeds, but the region is known for rearing a significant number of Murrah and Surti buffaloes.

Murrah

• Also known as Delhi, Kundi, and Kali.

Surti

• Also known as Deccani, Gujarati, Talabda, Charator, and Nadiadi.
