Nobel Prize

International Awards | General Awareness for SSC CGLThe Nobel Prizes are awarded according to the will of Alfred Bernhard Nobel, a renowned Swedish chemist and engineer who passed away in 1896. He is known for discovering nitroglycerine and its application in the creation of dynamite. Nobel Prizes are awarded annually in six categories: Peace, Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, and Economics. The first five categories were established in 1901, while the Nobel Prize in Economics was introduced in 1968.
The organizations responsible for awarding the prizes are as follows:

  • The Swedish Academy awards the Nobel Prize in Literature.
  • The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences is responsible for awarding the prizes in Physics and Chemistry, while the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden awards the prize in Medicine (Physiology).
  • The Bank of Sweden awards the prize in Economics.
  • The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by a committee appointed by the Norwegian Parliament.

Each Nobel Prize laureate receives a gold medal, a diploma, and a monetary award, which varies depending on the annual income of the Nobel Foundation. In 2014, the prize amount was set at 8.0 million Swedish Krona (SEK).
The Nobel Prizes are presented in Stockholm each year during a ceremony held on December 10th, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death. A Nobel Prize can be awarded to a maximum of three individuals in the same category at one time. The Nobel Prizes were not awarded between 1940 and 1942 due to World War II.
