Why is it Important to Know the Difference? |
Facts are statements that can be proven to be either true or false. They are based on observation, research, or experience and provide specific, definite information. Facts often include numbers, dates, or measurements.
Facts can be true or false, but they must always be something that can be proven.
Opinions are statements that express beliefs, judgments, or feelings. They cannot be proven because they are based on personal thoughts or preferences.
"Julia has one sister."
(Fact – This can be verified.)
"Hawaii is the prettiest place on Earth."
(Opinion – Beauty is subjective and cannot be proven.)
"Plants need sunshine, water, and nutrients to grow."
(Fact – This is scientifically proven.)
"Chocolate ice cream is the best flavor."
(Opinion – Different people have different tastes.)
Understanding the difference between facts and opinions helps you:
By practicing with different statements, you’ll become better at distinguishing between what can be proven and what is based on personal beliefs.
