Ans: (b)

  • The question is asking if there is a certain amount of flour available in the cupboard.
  • The correct word to use here is "any," which is used in questions to inquire about the presence of something.
  • Using "a few" or "lots" would not fit the context of the question, as they imply specific quantities rather than asking about availability.
  • Thus, the answer is "any," indicating that we are checking if there is some flour present.

Lake Baikal is a huge lake in Siberia, Russia. It is the biggest fresh water reservoir in the world. The lake is near Irkutsk. Somewhat crescent shaped, it is in the southern Siberia area of Russia. The lake is completely surrounded by mountains.
Baikal is about 636 kilometres long. It is 20 to 80 kilometres wide. At its deepest point, it is 1,700 metres deep. With this depth, it is the deepest lake on Earth. The lake is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It holds about 20% of the world’s unfrozen surface fresh water. The word baikal means “rich lake”, explaining the rich plants and animals found in the lake. There are more than 2,600 species of plants and animals. Of the 50 species of fishes, the most numerous are bullheads. Also abundant are the omul, salmon and lake whitefish.
Baikal’s age is 25–30 million years: it is one of the oldest lakes. More than 300 streams and rivers feed into Lake Baikal like Reka and Vitim rivers, but the Angara River is the only outlet. The Selenga River is the largest source of water coming into Lake Baikal. Flowing north from Mongolia, it contributes nearly 50 percent of the lake’s water. Lake Baikal may be warmer than other parts of Siberia, but in the winter it still gets very cold. The average air temperature in winter is minus 21 degrees celsius. Despite its size, Lake Baikal freezes over in the winter and usually melts in May or June.

Read the Passage and Answer the Questions That Follow. (Question 21 to 25)
Partridges, medium-sized birds live in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. They live in places such as moors, grasslands and farmlands. They feed mostly on seeds, and build their nests on the ground. This means their nests are not very safe from predators such as foxes. Partridges use their camouflage to make it difficult for predators to see them and their nests. Once one of the most familiar birds of the British countryside, their numbers have declined by as much as 80% in the last 30 years.
There are three different species of true partridges, the Grey, Daurian, and Tibetan partridge. All three species are relatively similar in shape, size, and color. Their plumage (feathers) is light colored and normally grey, tan, white, and black.
Partridges lay the biggest clutches of any birds, with 14 to 15 eggs usual, and even bigger clutches often recorded. Partridges form pairs early in the year, and these birds will stay together until the autumn. These are social birds and live in groups known as “coveys”. The young ones can feed as soon as they leave the nest, and are capable of their first proper flight at 15 days. Young chicks require a high proportion of insects in their diet: it is the lack of insects in the modern countryside that has led to the birds’ widespread decline. They are highly sedentary birds, seldom moving far from where they hatched.

Q21: Partridges inhabit environments such as _______, grasslands, and agricultural areas.
(a) ground
(b) trees
(c) moors
(d) underground

English Olympiad Model Test Paper - 3 | English Olympiad for Class 3  View Answer

Ans: (c)

  • Partridges are commonly found in moors, which are open, uncultivated uplands.
  • They also thrive in grasslands and farmlands, which provide ample food and shelter.
  • While they may be near ground or trees, these are not their primary habitats.
  • Understanding their habitat helps in conservation efforts and appreciating their role in the ecosystem.

Q22: Partridges' nests are not very secure from predators due to the fact that they __________.
(a) feed primarily on seeds
(b) lay a large number of eggs
(c) construct their nests on the ground
(d) create their nests in the bushes

English Olympiad Model Test Paper - 3 | English Olympiad for Class 3  View Answer

Ans: (c)

  • Partridges often build their nests on the ground, which makes them more vulnerable to predators.
  • Nests on the ground are easier for animals to find compared to those in trees or bushes.
  • While laying many eggs or feeding on seeds may be part of their behavior, it is the location of the nest that primarily affects its safety.
  • Thus, the correct answer is that they build their nests on the ground.

Q23: In the past three decades, the number of partridges has decreased by __________.
(a) 50%
(b) 80%
