Read the Passage and answer the question that follow. (Question 31 to 35)

Yoga is a practice that has been practised for centuries and is thought to have originated in India. It is a spiritual discipline that teaches a person to become more aware of his/her body, mind, and spirit.
In the beginning, it was used in the East to promote meditation and to control the mind and the body, but now there are various traditions of yoga being practised around the world. There are many different styles of yoga, which are practised in different countries.
One of the core areas of practice is breathing. This allows the learner to connect with the breath. By taking care of the mind and the body through breathing techniques, the practitioners are able to achieve heightened levels of awareness.
Practitioners are often encouraged to take a meditation break every thirty minutes. Practitioners will focus on their breathing and use these breaks to connect with their spirit.
Some practitioners may also practice ‘Japa’, which is a series of chanting and calling of the mantras, where participants focus on the messages of the mantras. The mantras are meant to help bring one to a meditative state, which can then be used to reach higher levels of spiritual awareness.
The process of performing this kind of meditation is called Kundalini, which literally means serpent power. Kundalini, along with Pranayama, will help prepare the body for higher levels of spiritual awareness. When practising Kundalini meditation, practitioners will experience physical sensations in both the top and bottom of the spine.
Another meditation that is practised to reach the highest levels of Kundalini is named Sukhasana. This means to hold back the throat, but not the breath. The goal of this type of meditation is to force the learner to slow down, which allows for deeper levels of relaxation and meditation.
We have all heard of meditation and the process of consciousness in the state of being quiet. Yogic practitioners may have their mind open, but the very essence of them is left behind as they may practice a state of oneness with the universe. They may learn to communicate and express themselves through this state of oneness.
When we choose to enter the natural state of our body, our mind, and spirit, they naturally merge together. As the breath becomes controlled and the mind moves to a meditative state, the body is inspired to move into a meditative state. This part of the practice is known as Asana.
While practising yoga there is a natural balancing effect that happens. It allows the body to work at its best level and it helps the mind to work at its best level. This is the basis for getting the most out of your yoga workout. There are many benefits of yoga workouts. It can be used to prepare for specific therapies. However, when you combine all the above elements, you have a very effective way to get your body ready for those higher levels of therapy.

Read the passage and answer the questions that follow. (Question 36 to 40)

William Faulkner, an American writer was known for his novels and short stories. He is regarded as one of the most significant American writers of all time. His work, ‘A Rose for Emily’, explored the history and legend of the south while delving into the sensitive insight on the human character. It deals with how Emily, the main character, refused to accept change. In it, he captured the spirit of his time and conveyed the past, and the present as it relates to the rejection of change and the rejection of progress.
Set in the post civil war of the late 1800s and the early 1900s, A Rose for Emily presents the two opposing sides of change: the townspeople who accepted it and Emily who refused it. Her father influenced her attitude towards any transformations; while their house; the manservant, Tobe; Colonel Sartoris; and her lover, Homer, symbolized the past. Emily was raised very traditionally; her father was a very old-fashioned man who did not believe in the equality of men and women. Even in the changing world of equality, he taught Emily that a woman’s place is just in the background. Her adoration for him was made obvious by her keeping of his “crayon portrait,” and his influence on her is best portrayed in his death, a death that took her 3 days to recognize. On his death, Emily refused to accept that something has changed - her father is gone.

This refusal to accept change is also seen in her keeping of the manservant, Tobe. Even after all the transformations that the post-war had ushered, a war fought mainly to end slavery, Emily declined to give Tobe his freedom. She had kept him until the day she died: when ‘‘she died ... the negro walked right through the house and out the back and was not seen again.’’ Emily was set in her ways and nothing, not even the ambivalence of the people towards her, transformed that. She was pitied, disdained, scrutinized, and there were those who were glad when she had fallen: “she had become humanized,” they said. Emily did not budge: she remained the reclusive, mysterious, eccentric, who rejected change.

Change is a concept that Emily would not grasp. When the “next generation” of town leaders tried to make her pay her taxes, she clung to Colonel Sartori’s old agreement that her tax is remitted. Colonel Sartori’s death, like the other neighborhood changes, was rejected, and she was firm in reiterating that “she does not have taxes in Jefferson.” She had dismissed them the way she had dismissed their fathers “thirty years before...” By not accepting her civic duties, and by rejecting fellowship, Emily preserved the past by denying the present.

A personification of Emily, the Grierson home was a “[a] stubborn and coquettish decay.” Emily, just like her home, the once symbol of grandeur, of southern aristocracy, is the only one left of her kind in the neighborhood. While “... garages and cotton gins had encroached and obliterated...the neighborhood,” she resisted and refused the change, and lived a life just like a time capsule that was never buried. She was caught between the past and the present time and she stood still - just like her home, she stood there unaffected by the changes around her. Emily refused and resisted change; in essence, she refused progress.

Progress is necessary for our joy and satisfaction. It is essential that we learn from the past and use it to make things better for the future. Emily typified the post-war southerners who strongly refused change and viewed it as futile. She lived her life dwelling in the past, stubbornly snubbed the changes around her, and stayed in recluse. She was isolated until her very end, which could have been avoided had she been a little open minded and malleable to change, for change is inevitable. As the former UK Prime Minister, the late Harold Wilson said: “He who rejects change is the architect of decay. The only human institution, which rejects progress is the cemetery.”

Q36: Choose the suitable title or heading for the passage.
(a) Orthodox Traditions
(b) William Faulkner
(c) Emily: Rejecting Progression
(d) Emily Embraced Change

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 3 | Olympiad Preparation for Class 10  View Answer

Ans: (c)

  • The passage discusses Emily's attitude towards change and how she resists it.
  • Option (c) "Emily: Rejecting Progression" accurately reflects her refusal to adapt to new circumstances.
  • Other options do not capture the essence of her character and choices as effectively.
  • Thus, the best title that summarizes the passage is option (c).

Q37: Why did Emily decline to embrace the changes?
(a) Because her father influenced her attitude towards any transformation.
(b) Emily herself was a traditional woman.
(c) Emily’s mother wished for her to remain unchanged throughout her life.
(d) Because her father urged her to accept the changes, but she rejected it independently.

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 3 | Olympiad Preparation for Class 10  View Answer

Ans: (a)

  • Emily's refusal to accept the changes was primarily due to her father's influence on her views regarding transformation.
  • This suggests that her father's opinions played a significant role in shaping her attitude.
  • While other options mention her being traditional or her mother's wishes, the key reason is her father's impact.
  • Thus, the correct answer highlights the importance of familial influence on personal choices.

Q38: Choose the incorrect statement regarding Emily’s perspective on the changes.
(a) Emily refused to accept that something had changed when her father died.
(b) Emily declined to give Tobe his freedom even after the war when slavery was abolished.
(c) Emily willingly paid the taxes when the town leaders asked her to pay.
(d) Emily dismissed her civic duties by preserving the past.

English Olympiad Previous Year Paper - 3 | Olympiad Preparation for Class 10  View Answer

Ans: (c)

  • Emily's attitude towards change is highlighted in her actions and decisions.
  • She did not accept the changes brought by her father's death, indicating her resistance.
  • Even after the abolition of slavery, she chose not to free Tobe, showing her unwillingness to adapt.
